Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I brought home another disk and it didn’t work either. After a few tries, surprise - it stopped in/ejecting properly. I took it back apart and the spring had popped off.
I tried cutting it down a little to keep it from popping off again but while it will go through the motions it seems to drop...
Well, I put everything back inside. I stuck in a regular 1/2AA that was at my office. The date on it was 2001. I doubt it's much better than the one that was in it that said 1995, but figured I'd put it in until the adapter comes.
Anyway, it accepts & ejects the floppy disk I have. And while it...
Well, I went ahead and lubed up the drive and put it back together. Yesterday I thought the spring wouldn’t even stay in place due to the deformation but after everything was in place it stayed even after a couple manual ejection motions. I doubt 1) it will stay in place long term and 2) that...
Thanks for taking the time to get those measurements, that will certainly help!
I'll do some more searching and see what I can find...or yeah, maybe see if I can find a junk drive to scavenge. I still don't know how I destroyed the thing so quickly.
Thanks, I've had a hard time figuring out the length it should be since it's deformed. Seems about .125" diameter, and maybe ~.75-.875" to the loop ends if it was still properly coiled, but I'm unsure. It also seems to be more tightly coiled at one end than the other. I'm not sure whether it's...
Welp, I took out the floppy drive but even then everything was so crusty that it didn't want to move into the "down" position.
So as I was pushing the lever that is indicated in this screenshot from an Adrian's Digital Basement video for getting the drive to go down, I guess I pushed it too far...
OK, so I had a couple other threads, but I thought maybe it'd be best to consolidate since I'm liable to have a lot of questions.
I finally brought the SE home today, and the Torx T15 came as well. I did a trick mentioned by @JDW in an old thread regarding turning the brightness all the way up...
I wound up with a refund of 50% of purchase price (other than shipping). So now it's just up to me to get it taken care of. Hopefully the clean & lube does the trick. I'll check out the @JDW youtube channel. If not, I may just put the refund toward a Floppy Emu.
I ordered a Torx T15, which...
Thanks again!
The seller is offering me either a partial refund, or to send a replacement floppy drive. My fear is a replacement drive may have the same issue, as I doubt they will have taken time to clean/lubricate test it. But on the other hand, the partial refund may not cover the cost of a...
Thanks, I figured that would be the place to start a fix. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't overlooking something stupid. I will start looking up those videos to start getting an idea what's in store. I need to order a Torx T15 to replace the battery anyway.
But if all were functioning...
So my SE SuperDrive that I received yesterday doesn't seem to accept a disk.
I don't have any 3.5" disks that have content that's actually for the SE/System 7.1 but I found a disk here at the office that was for Mac OS8 disk tools. While I didn't expect to be able to read it, I figured it would...
Ah, I think this is the pertinent info from lowendmac.com:
HFS Floppies: Fully Readable, No Writes with OS X 10.6 or Later
The good news is that all tested versions of Mac OS X are able to read 1.4 MB floppy disks in a USB floppy drive. The bad news – well, at least less good – is that...
I don't currently have any floppy disks to test, whether system or otherwise unfortunately.
I just tried holding shift from restart & then again from full switched off. After both the arrow is still there. Also in the Apple Menu the "Alarm Clock" and "Control Panels" are both grayed out. I'm...
Well, it arrived today (and my ADB keyboard/mouse combo came yesterday). It's running System 7.1 - I'll try to get an image showing of all the extensions later, or at the very least try the above method to disable them and see if the arrow disappears.
It is a former school computer (Tucson...
Thanks all - that's pretty much as expected. I would figure on it only being a display, unless long-term I decide I want to fix.
Just not sure how much I want a display right now after just buying an SE SuperDrive (and now an ADB keyboard/mouse set) - and needing to get a new (modern) printer...
Another newbie thread. I might take on a non-functioning Color Classic from a friend, for about $50 or so.
When he dug it out of storage, he found the battery holder rusted/corroded off, and the board looks pretty iffy to me. That said, I don't really know if the board is beyond repair or not –...
Thanks again. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Of course, it doesn't come with a keyboard or mouse, so now I've gotta find a decent deal on those.
I'll try to remember to update this thread once it's been delivered and I've had a chance to check it out.
