I've found its the amount of cap goo leakage that affects the pads causing them to lift with either method

Should the light on the switch stay on . When I press mine the light comes on but then goes of again

Power button seems to work but could be a problem? One short press switches the red led on thge logic on a lond press switches it off. @herd yes I'm going down the temperature route and the board does have the mod I'll have a look at that as well. Thanks everyone, appreciated

And its dead again!! tried to install MacOS 9.2 started OK then froze and won't go again. I think its the logic board unfortunately

OK bit the bullet and put the XPC7400 RX486PK in and miraculously it works. Looks like its only a 350mhz chip? but it is at least working. We'll see if it lasts

And its dead again For no apparent reason won't boot again. I've not read anything about caps being a problem on cubes but is it a possibility?

Some success did another PRAM reset and got to the flashing folder screen. Looks like the CDROM and HD are cactus so next I'll try a firewire cd drive.

Yes have speakers and get no chime. I'll try the external drive but have no video just black screen. No usb mouse light up. Doesn't appear to be booting at all as I said if I connect the hard drive to the IDE cable it doesn't spin up. Done PRAM reset.
