Been trying to inventory old disk and hardware utilities.
Anyone remember Tim Seufert's dctest (the dc was something like "data corruption")?
The idea was to test HDD interfaces. It repeatedly wrote (what was then) a large file to the disk, then read and verified it bit by bit.
I found it...
Been poking around and still not sure of the precise problem(s) with these cards and Macs. Some of my search results talked about signal timing issues. Some DOS-USB hackers mentioned Via was the only one who paid to license UHCI from Intel, while NEC etc. used OHCI. Maybe OHCI plays better in...
Thanks for the tips.
Yeah, I'd been looking through Newegg, etc. The "mac-associated" brand names I remember, including the ones you both mentioned above, seem to be quite a bit higher in price. So much so that those direct from China generic cards on --bay looked mighty tempting at a total...
Before I start messing around, can anyone refresh my memory on sleep problems with installed PCI to USB adapter cards?
As best I recall, it was mostly about PCI to USB 2.0 adapter cards in G4 towers like Quicksilver or MDD.
Either they'd re-awaken right after getting to sleep, or get caught in...
Curiosity got the best of me. Y'all called it right as usual: a big dome on a mercedes-benz logo topped cap - though not obviously venting yet.
Whew getting inside was an experience. (That what they call plastic welding?)
Thanks.
Sigh. Caps once again. The bane of vintage electronics...
Wish I had been old enough to learn to solder etc. when my uncle the "TV man" was around, doing repairs in his basement. I do remember that back then he called them condensers.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a peek if I can find an...
Well, hard to tell ages exactly (just haphazardly added FW storage as space was needed), except for the newest - two 4 yr old SATA miniStacks (one at 10.4V and the other at 11.8V (unlike the others, this adapter has 4 rubber foot pads and its label has thinner font green print).
The others in...
Hi,
Just curious if others have found that the Jentecs that came with various OWC external HDD enclosures are slipping below spec output voltage as they age.
When troubleshooting an out of warranty OWC case (turned out the IDE drive was bad), I happened to check the voltage coming out of the...
Update:
Decided I was too lazy to deal with multiple disk images, and went with the LW 8.6.smi self mounting image installer. It ran quickly, and upon restart used the "new" Desktop Printer Utility to add the 2012 printer (LPR) as Generic PostScript. Everything tried printed fine.
Thanks for...
Thanks. I'll check out the 7.5.5 link.
Perhaps because this is a new LaserJet Pro 400 series monochrome with PostScript 3 built into the printer (M401n/$200). Have not yet tried non-PS printers with any Mac, even 10.6+, but can imagine host-based printing to be a problem.
Hi,
New printer in the mix and would like to enable LPR printing on a 7.6.1 Mac.
Several sites mention installing LW 8.6 as the solution. Apple's "older software" download site links 8.5.1 and 8.6.1, but found plain 8.6 in the parent directory of the linked files.
Is plain 8.6 the general...
Hi,
I'm trying to ID some unmarked Mini DIN-4 cables (ADB vs S-Video vs ??) from a mixed parts box - and don't have an Apple brand cable to compare with.
Using a cheap old continuity tester, looks like two types (for both pins seem wired straight through)
1) The cylindrical shells on each end...
Not sure about for the oldest Macs/Systems, but I've had good luck getting older Iomega drivers at http://www.cometenterprises.com/drivers_download_entry.html. Never had luck at iomega.com. Individuals probably have additional versions archived on other sites.
