Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions related to SCSI ID issues. My take on this is I would be replicating what an external drive within an enclosure would do. After posting my last reply, I went back to the SE/30 that still had the internal and bare external scsi hard drives s...
The old hard drives are naked, not in an enclosure with an ID selector. I’m not knowledgable in how to change the SCSI ID. How do I change it? Never done it before on an SE/30 with OS 7.1. Preferences? Or do I need an application with the capability to do so?
A box of old 50 pin SCSI hard drives that I had in deep storage needs to be examined, or possibly disposed of. I counted 9 of them and do not know if they are functional or not. And, if they are functional, I am curious to know what was stored on them. These have been stored for twenty or...
Not sure what happened, but my LC 575 has been operating perfectly after having the motherboard recapped last summer. That all changed yesterday, when I decided to put an a different ethernet card on it to see if it was functional. Well, the ethernet card couldn’t be tested, so I pulled it...
Yes, it had been in dry, room temperature storage for more than ten years. Just found it recently and put it into my LC575 to see if it was functional or not. Turns out it it is, but slower than it should be by a factor of 10. Will be pursuing a good cleaning and recapping of it. Thanks for...
Yes, had five of them done within the past few months. This is the only one remaining, having been kept as a spare should it be needed. Are you thinking the caps are responsible for the weak CPU performance or perhaps other components as well?
Soldering on boards is not in my wheelhouse, so prefer someone else do those tasks for me. I have learned that my skills lie elsewhere. :) Here are a closeup photos of the board in question. Also a couple of shots of test results: first, Norton, and second, Speedometer. Apologies for the...
Norton Utilities benchmark rating for the LC575 is 6.87. To compare, my stock original Color Classic benchmark rating is 10. Modified with a 68040 accelerator, the Color Classic benchmark rating is 60. Seems like the LC575 should have been higher….
Update: To double check the possibility of Norton being the problem, I switched out the questionable logic board with another LC575 board I had on hand that has been recently recapped. With the replacement board, Norton reports the 68040 running at 33 Mhz, as expected. Put the other board...
Is this a capacitor issue? According to Norton Utilities test, the 68040 processor on my LC575 is operating at a speed of only 6 Mhz. Not 66, but only 6. Would this be indicative of a capacitor issue or possibly something else?
The time has come to give one of my old Macs, a Color Classic running OS 7.5.5, away to a another family member. How do I remove the ownership ID and password from what I have been using so the new owner can insert their own identification and password? I plan to leave the hard drive contents...
What utility program is recommended for analyzing overall system performance of my Color Classic running OS 7.5.5 with a 040 accelerator? Floppy disk versions only. I would like to compare it’s performance using it’s original unaltered logic board with performance when equipped with a Sonnet...
Well, the swap of logic boards has been made………and…….no change at all. Same symptoms as before making the change, those being: put in floppy disk, but no icon appears on desktop, message appear on screen saying “This disk is unreadable by this Macintosh. Do you want to initialize this disk?”...
Thanks for the cleaning suggestions. Will resort to them if a need to remove the drive again is necessary. Now that we are suspicious of the logic board, there is an existing logic board issue regarding the startup chime, that being it doesn’t chime on startup. This isn’t a new issue. It was...
The head cleaning kit arrived and was finally able to clean the floppy drive today. No change at all. Same “This disk is unreadable by this Macintosh. Do you want to initialize the disk?” message as before. Interestingly, I used Tech Tool Pro to clean the floppy drive, and it worked...
SCSI Probe loaded fine once I had the correct download to work with. It shows the internal HD as ID: 0. The Apple external HD ID is: 5, which was indicated on the drive’s id selector. The other, off brand HD was ID: 6, which was recommended by Phipli. As to what the conflicting ID may have...
