It has been a lot of years, but as I recall you must use the same brand pseudo-static memory chip. Or use the more expensive full static memory chip.
I don't think it needs any resisters. I think all of that is taken care of in the memory control IC. It would be good to add ceramic capacitors...
Internally the 165 uses 5 V linear regulators. If you feed it 12 V you risk overheating the pass transistors and popping the electrolytic caps. As I recall the caps were rated for either 12 V or 15 V.
The 540c was set up to use at least four different manufacturers displays. Each with its own ribbon cable. It is important to match the display to the correct ribbon cable.
