Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
(Both spellings to help with discoverability).
Some time ago I removed all the components from an SE AB to have a go at reverse-engineering it. Then I realised I had all the SE ABs I was ever likely to need and the last thing I needed was to build any more and make my life even more cluttered...
This is a thread for scans of packing lists, so there's somewhere to put a record of what actually came in the box with what hardware. Here's a few to start with:
LaserWriter IINT/NTX accessories pack (British)
StyleWriter accessories pack (International)
AEK II
Centris 650 with CD-ROM Drive...
tl;dr: resolving an IP address conflict can cause Apple IP Gateway to go into some kind of infinite loop and crash. If you must run IP Gateway, keep the IP ranges used for MacIP and normal allocations disjoint; better still, use macipgw.
Apparent Symptoms:
I rebooted my virtual machine...
(this thread is a followon of a kind from @jeremywork's sixty eight thousand thread, which got diverted into discussion of different PDS SCSI cards. To enable that thread to keep talking about sixty eight thousand stuff when anyone has more to say, and to help people who might find this card...
Trying to install MkLinux on a Daystar Genesis MP (with a mildly dodgy CPU2, but bleh - my understanding is that the installation/default kernel is single processor).
I've stuffed the mklinux boot files (the MkLinux control panel, the boot extension, the kernel, the settings files) in the...
It's been known for a long time that 10.4 "requires" a G3 or G4 in a rather loose sense; it won't boot on one, but the reason it won't boot on one is because the kernel checks what processor it's on and refuses to play pre-G3.
This check can be patched out, and it will boot. Most of the rest...
Indications:
Fresh install of Mac OS X Server 1.x ("Rhapsody"). This does not apply to 10.x.
When you try to run NetworkManager or HDNamer, they just die and dump you back to Workspace Manager.
In the console (from the Workspace manager's Tools menu), you see these are from bus errors.
During...
As far as I can see there is nothing stopping zone names or NBP object/type names from containing \0s.
Has anyone tried this against real implementations of AppleTalk? How well (or badly) are such things dealt with?
This message brought to you by "ah, crap, I have to rewrite my ZIP table"
Neutral's NeuNet is an alternative cabling system for AppleTalk that was designed in the UK that nobody seems to have now heard of. At first sight, the fact that it uses telephone connectors (although UK ones) invites comparison with PhoneNet, but it's actually designed very differently and to...
I seem to have built a prototype LocalTalk hub, mostly to learn how to. It provides six ports (arbitrary number).
I am in some doubt as to the actual usefulness of this thing. Would they be useful to anyone else? Is it worth actually debugging this/testing it properly?
(pinging @Durosity...
On the train this morning when I should have been working, I was idly thinking about LocalTalk (because I'm a huge nerd) and how come I've never had to worry about termination when playing with it. Termination here is to deal with signal reflections: when a pulse hits the end of a wire that's...
Oddly, I can't find a good photo of the specification / current ratings panel for the Quadra 950 power supply online. So here is one from one of my (rather grotty, on closer inspection) PSUs.
There's not a huge amount that's useful on the LC burnin connector. However, if you do want to interface with it, the catchily named EDAC 307-044-520-202 will do you.
You will need to hacksaw or dremel off one end of the connector, so that it is open at one end. The end result will look...
I've built an internal HD20 emulator for the Plus and (presumably) the 512ke (but I don't have a spare logic board to socket the IWM on, so...). It sits between the IWM and the logic board, which allows it to be internal while still letting the floppy port on the back of the machine works. It...
I was lucky enough to get hold of the Outbound Laptop docking card for the Macintosh SE. This card allows the Outbound Laptop to drive the zombified ROMless SE like a giant PDS card and use all its I/O. The card consists of a single programmable logic device and an enormous quantity of 74...
There is an infuriating but not totally useless tool to probe the early boot sequence of A/UX provided by the launcher. If you pass the -b option, followed by a virtual address within the kernel, the instruction at that address will be rewritten to be a reset. Thus, if the computer resets...
Some time ago I promised @demik I'd create a thread to post pictures of rackmount macs.
Belatedly, here it is. I had to get my AppleTalk router out of the rack for some maintenance and took a couple of photos.
This is a 1U rackmounted LC II. The case is rather messy and there is a lot I'd do...
I wrote these bullet points for a forum member in PM and they encouraged me to post it as a thread here. Lots of people know IP fairly well, and a lot of that knowledge is transferrable to AppleTalk. Here's a very brisk guide to layers 2 and 3 in AppleTalk land.
First, "What is AppleTalk"...
