Attempting To Program Something Using LLMs With Zero Knowledge or Skill

I get Google Gemini for free at work. So I've been messing around with it. Currently I am attempting to make a tiny database program using THINK C version 6 on System 7. I attempted to start with Codewarrior, but it was a complete failure. I then tried Symantec C++ and it was a bit better...

Is there anything remarkable about this ROM from a Mac 10 HDD?

I acquired a Paradise Systems Mac 10 hard drive. Unfortunately the 10MB Rodime drive in it was toast. Annoyingly, the HDD's sector map was not filled in. So I don't know if I can find a compatible HDD. I've heard that MFM drives are notoriously picky when it comes to what drives will work...

Is the PowerBook Floppy Drive compatible with Macintosh floppy port?

Assuming you had an HDI-20 to DB-19 adapter cable (don't know if anyone ever made one), would the PowerBook floppy drive work off a desktop Macintosh's floppy port? (i.e. IIci, SE, etc.)

Make Color Scans With a Grayscale Scanner?

I was just thinking. If you had an original Apple OneScanner and some 8x11 color filters, could you still make color scans by doing one pass for each color? Then recombine them in Photoshop? Would that work? Friday morning thoughts. Everyone is at home, so I'm alone at work. :P

    Color Dark Castle

Yes! Snagged Color Dark Castle off eBay. Maybe I paid too much, but I've been looking for this one for a long time. I have the manual for the game, but no disks. Which is fine cuz almost all of Delta Tao's games shipped with just the manual and disks shrinkwrapped. I'm curious about the 2...

Armor-Alley.net - Did anyone know about this?

https://armor-alley.net/ Someone made a browser based, fully networked version of Armor Alley / Rescue Raiders. :)

    Swapping Floppy Parts Around

@luRaichu had asked in a profile post about swapping the circuit board from a SuperDrive to an 800K drive to convert it. I know from personal experience that won't work because at the very least the chassis is slightly different between the two and it won't fit. However, I've swapped the head...

Can you format each individual side of a double sided disk?

I was just curious if it's possible to format each individual side of a double sided disk. For example, format an 800K disk as two 400K single sides. Or a 1.4MB disk as two 720K sides.

Are System 7.x Golden Masters identical to release?

Just curious about the Golden Master releases. If I have, for example, a System 7.5 GM CD, will the 7.5.3 and/or 7.5.5 Updates recognize them and update them? Or are the GM releases sort of islands on their own as a developer release?

Field Strip a Macintosh LC in Under 30 Seconds

Apparently back in the 1990s, one of the demos a sales person would do is strip an LC in about 30 seconds to demonstrate the repairability of the machine. Seems like this could be a fun challenge to do at meetups. Disassemble and reassemble an LC in working order in under a minute. "This is...

Patch 8*24 GC Control Panel for Compatibility with Drag & Drop?

I have another 8*24 GC question. Apparently one of the reasons for the 8*24 GC's problems with newer systems is that the 8*24 GC control panel is incompatible with the Drag & Drop extension. It will cause all sorts of visual artifacts. Is this something could be patched and fixed? I'm not...

Can a Rev A 8*24 GC be upgraded to Rev B with a ROM swap?

I didn't know there were two different revisions. The Rev B apparently fixes some bugs and adds 832 x 624 resolution and 16-bit color. Would a ROM swap be able to add the new resolution and 16-bit color? Or would the RAMDAC prevent that from working?

Better Trackball for Kensington Turbo Mouse

I finally did (and discovered) what everyone else did in the 1980s and 1990s - replace the OEM trackball in their Turbo Mouse with an American billiard ball. I did this for my Kensington Turbo Mouse 5.0. I don't know if it's true for the original, Pro (2.0), 3.0, and 4.0. I bought a classic 8...

Maybe the coolest monitor probably never released for the Mac? Nexsys TarMac

Was watching old Computer Chronicles episodes, and this beauty showed up in their 1989 MacWorld special. It's the Nexsys TarMac Gas Plasma Display. It came in sizes up to THIRTY inches and included a touchscreen. With a price tag of $30,000 in 1989 dollars, I wonder if they ever sold any. I...

    Are PowerBook keyboards ADB?

I was just wondering if 68k PowerBook keyboards are still ADB, or if they were something else? I was looking at a picture of one, and thought that with a 3D printed case, it'd make for a really nice looking charcoal colored Mac keyboard. Wasn't the TAM keyboard just a PowerBook keyboard? I...

    SimCity Supreme (Color)

Just won this on eBay for $20. Pictured below is the eBay picture. I didn't even notice the box. When it arrived, it was in mint condition. Looked almost new. It's the original Godzilla SimCity box, but with a metallic sticker stuck on it that says "SUPREME." It comes with two disks with...

Porting Abandonware to Platforms that Never Had Them?

So I was reading about how people can use AI assisted tools to do some amazing things like decompiling binaries to assembly, then reverse-compiling (is that the right word?) the assembly into actual, useable C++ (or some other language) by using AI and brute force to generate code that would...

Centris 610 is a Candidate for "Dirtiest 68k Mac"

Oof. I think these might be a bit worse than the IIci and LC given the sheer number of cap cans on this thing. I'm recapping a Centris 610 board, and boy howdy are those some leaky caps. I was using tweezers to hold down the base as I snipped the caps off, and they just disintegrated...

    Bother with recapping floppy drives?

I had a marathon clean / lubrication with some troublesome floppy drives I have. Ran into a few inconsistent issues that (sometimes) swapping parts around fixed, such as swapping heads around from different mechanisms. Some heads work better than others, even though they've all been thoroughly...
