Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

I installed the SSD into the system today: It took 1 hour and 10 minutes to copy across 50.91GB! Here's the new drive speed test result: It's a significant improvement over the original mechanical drive: (Especially in the random read and write department!)

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

There's a bit of goop, but these units appear to be relatively service friendly:

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

Here's the Schematic for the AcBel Power Supply that's in My machine: (The Power Supplies in MDD's are prone to failure due to bad caps. So it will be a wise move to re-cap my system's power supply.) Here's list of capacitors required to re-cap the AcBel MDD Power Supply: I don't want do...

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

Here’s a video showing the comparison: I do have a SONNET Tempo PCI SATA card in my G3 B&W fitted with a 1GHz SONNET G4 upgrade.

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

The MDD now has its full complement of RAM: (2GB) I've purchased one of these from Amazon in the US, so it will take a few weeks to get here: (StarTech.com port 2.5 in, 3.5 in IDE to SATA Converter, Hard Drive Adapter) To replace the spinning rust with an SSD. Others have tested this...

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

I also have this Firewire 800 Dual 1.42GHz machine which I'll have to put up against the Dual 1.8GHz at some point, just to see if the increase in MHz gives a linear increase in performance between these two systems. As there's a large difference in cache size between to two CPU modules.

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

The late 90's to early 2000's was a great time to be alive!

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

The cache on the Dual 1.8GHz's on-die, and that makes a huge difference, even though it's smaller. If I managed to get this cheaply, then I'd consider modding it, but considering what I paid, I don't want to touch it. (As a collectable part, it is what it is.)

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

I haven't tried it as yet, but it apparently should work. (I'll maybe take a look at trying it later on) I have another rather interesting machine which serves as my OS9 machine. (OS9 runs like a champ on this machine.)

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

My Digital Audio has a single 1.42GHz SONNET upgrade and it's pretty speedy.

Upgrading my G4 MDD with a SONNET Encore/Crescendo MDX G4 Duet 1.8GHz Dual CPU Upgrade

I've finally managed to get my hands on one of the very rare SONNET CPU upgrades for the PowerMac G4 Mirror Doors: (I purchased this one from a seller in Japan) This is what the machine originally looked like on the inside: (It was originally a single 1.25GHz Machine with...

    Two G4s in a beige!

If it takes too long to get a XLR8 MPE card, I may try a 500MHz SONNET ZIF G4 CPU in the secondary socket.

    Two G4s in a beige!

He was just speculating on the cause, but there are issues fitting G3 CPU’s into these cards.

    Two G4s in a beige!

According to the manual, the molex adapter needs to be connected whether running with a single or dual CPU. Here’s someone else had issues with a 300MHz G3 CPU from a beige system in an XLR8 card:

    Two G4s in a beige!

I haven’t tried it with the Yikes CPU yet. There was a issue with the shipping for Germany, so the order was cancelled. I tried to get it to work with a G3 in the second slot. The machine posted, and gave the gong and the Happy Mac image, but the OS wouldn’t come up. I was attempting to run the...

    Two G4s in a beige!

I’m still running my G3 beige with a single CPU, but today I decided to see if I couldn’t get the installed CPU to run @ 500MHz? I’m happy to report that the overlock was successful and it’s now running @ 501MHz!!! (This is screaming fast for a Beige)
