Cache size and ratio is usually programmed in a small serial eeprom, but you can alternatively use XLR8 MACh speed control (or similar) to enable the full size.
That was my experience on a trayloader iMac at least.
Pff, serves me right for being smug, I might have popped my first BGA chip yesterday. Need to get a reflow oven or just take it really easy with the heat next time.
Didn’t @dosdude1 do this recently? I thought he had to modify the iBooks’ firmware.
I’m a bit confused, OP was asking about the LC5x0 series. I’m not seeing the connection to the 630/5xx0/6xx0 series.
Although its function isn’t clear, it seems like the bay being asked about has nothing to do with a TV tuner.
Yes, once upgraded to PPC. The 1400 is basically a souped up 500! They all use the PBX memory controller/bus translator connected to an '030 peripheral bus.
Nice. I was searching the forums and Google for these instructions last night but came up short.
It's a very artificial imposition since there's absolutely nothing architecturally about the PowerBook 500 with PowerPC that's any different from a 2300 or 5300 Series, fundamentally speaking. The...
How did you manage this? I have a PowerPC card now but I can't boot Mac OS 9.0.4. I get an error "This OS can't be used with this Macintosh" just after the splash screen appears.
Did you patch the System File?
Did you already swap in all the RAM from your IIvx, upgrading it to 4MB?
If so, you can use the 424410 chips (because they are 4 bit chips) but not the 424100 chips (because they are 1 bit chips). Eight chips need to add up to 32 bit (the width of the data bus) hence you need to use 4 bit...
I re-read the thread and Zane (the OP) was saying he doesn't recommend the mod, as it reduces performance if using onboard video. Bank A which the video uses is performance constricted so it's better to keep it to 1MB. You want all your apps to be in Bank B.
Yep. Not saying it’ll fix the death chimes but since you’re changing chips anyway you might as well upgrade.
Some discussion here:
https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/upgrading-iisi-onboard-ram-to-4mb.468/
IIvx has 4MB onboard (512k per chip) so is not the same since the IIsi has 1MB.
The Classic has the same 1MB onboard (128k per chip).
FYI you can upgrade the IIsi to 4MB so you could use the IIvx as a donor if you change all the chips.
He doesn’t have a rom simm, he said it is onboard.
