    6100 issues

Heat sink removed and old heat sink grease cleaned from CPU and heat sink? At this age the heat sink compound has turned to chalk. It needs to be cleaned off and replaced. Gently. The CPU is fragile and those clip based heat sinks don't do it any favors.

Power Mac 7500-9600 Bus Speed Overclocking

I've never found any public documentation of it and the NewerTech employee who told me about asked me to keep it secret -- NDAs or some such. I think it's been long enough... I wish I had asked him for those internal apps. He probably would have had to say no, but I never asked...

Power Mac 7500-9600 Bus Speed Overclocking

I've had 9500 systems adn clones up to 62 MHz using a PowerBoost Pro. I think that was a PowerLogix upgrade, but maybe XLR8? It was a PPC604e upgrade though, not a G3 or G4. There are three pins in the CPU socket called ChipID which signal Hammerhead how to adjust the bus and memory...

    Powermac 9500 & 8600 Mashup? Anyone attempted?

Unless you get a "Kansas", AKA Macintosh 9600 Enhanced logic board, the only difference between the 9500 and the original 9600 is the power supply connector and a slight ROM upgrade. The Power Macintosh 9600 Enhanced has other changes, like removal of the onboard 512K L2 cache, a slight...

    General G3/G4 ZIF upgrade questions

I also wasn't thinking about laptops where activity monitoring is more likely to be a feature. In my experience, ASP always reports the wrong CPU speed on these upgrades (in a PM8500/PM9500 clone running Classic) but GuagePro or Clockometer report it correctly and always report the full...

    General G3/G4 ZIF upgrade questions

Thank you. The message mentions that the information is OSX centric. My experience with those upgrades has been purely in Classic OS. I didn't think about the possibility that htey had added CPU activity monitoring in OSX.

    General G3/G4 ZIF upgrade questions

I don't think they actually do that. At least, the version built for the X500 machines (non-ZIF) don't. You set the multiplier you want in the Powerlogix software and they configure to that speed. There's some other stuff you can set, but it's been too long. Wetware memory is not...

Mac IIci: Bus arbitration: Is there any documentation available?

A lot of the bus arbitration is going to be sort of generic 68030 bus information. Apple's documentation assumes you're already an expert at all things 68030 related (or PPC related if one is trying to understand later machines).

HELP! Damaged traces on UE12 pads on SE/30 board

Not entirely luck. The NC pads always seem to be less securely adhered. Maybe just the fact that they don't have connected trace that runs under the solder mask.

Power Macintosh 9600 ram modules question

Interesting about the 256 MB modules in a Genesis, as a careful reading of the PCI Power Macintosh Hardware Developer Note and what memory chip addressing schemes are supported will lead to the conclusion that 128 MB per DIMM is the maximum supported. The 7200 on the other hand, clearly...

    8100/80AV Unstable

    The jumpers represent different powers of 2 and they're additive. Hence, 0 => 2^0 =1; 1 => 2^1 = 2; 2 => 2^2 = 4. For example, jumpers on 0 and 2 gives you 1 + 4 = 5, so SCSI ID 5. Jumpers on 0, 1 and 2 would give you 1 + 2 + 4 = 7. Some devices actually label the jumpers 1, 2, and 4...

    About lubricating that floppy drive...

I appreciate the info because I was wondering why I have a small unopened tub of EM-30L in the garage...

    8100/80AV Unstable

I saw in your original post, you have the AV version. Are you testing with the AV card installed? An empty PDS slot could cause problems. On your CDROM drive, is it possible you have all three SCSI ID jumpers installed? It's been a long time but I think I only saw that repeated device when...

Twin Turbo 128M8 corruption in odd pattern

I had a near identical issue with an ixMicro Ult. Rez. card back when they were new and shiny. ixMicro told me the symptoms were definitely a bad VRAM chip and replaced the card for me. That issue also moved around with differing resolutions. The VRAM storage gets interleaved in different...

Upgrading the ROM of a PM9600.

Except some very early 9600s, the ROM chips are soldered to the logic board and the ROM DIMM socket is empty. However, the ROM DIMM socket and DIMM module are designed such that installing a ROM DIMM module in the socket will disable the on-board (motherboard) ROM chips. One of the pins in...

Upgrading the ROM of a PM9600.

@Cory5412 @cheesestraws @mdeverhart Already done back around 2002, see top board in images. Sorry I missed this when it was current. I didn't have much time for forums last year. Do not exchange ROMs between the Beige G3 and the X500/X600 series. The Beige G3 module is wired for...

    PEx ROM Project

I'm not sure @jimjamyahauk ever installed his. It has been almost 15 years since the start of hte project and he's moved a few times and I think started a family in that period. I'm not sure, but I think his 9700 is stored away and not easy to get to.

Anyone got a spare Beige G3 ROM?

No problem. It' s just new information to add to the pot.

Anyone got a spare Beige G3 ROM?

Interesting. Thank you. I have a 2-chip Rev. C with Apple part numbers and several 2-chip Rev. As all with the same (as each other) Apple part numbers on the chips, but the only Rev. B I've ever had was actually a Flash module with multiple chips, so I've never gotten teh chip numbers for the...
