I have a couple just like that. Likely because they worked in macs? But it's been so long, I don't remember. I can throw one in a Mac and see if it shows up.

The only option left for ethernet is a CS II ethernet card. If you have other macs, you can set up a LocalTalk network, but it’s slow and difficult to configure if you want to browse the web. For copying files it just works though.

I've never used any with mine, they don't get very hot and the metal to metal contact is pretty good. But, officially, you should probably use some paste or a thermal pad :)
