Testing 333MHz IBM 604ev 288in PGA module with G3 carrier for a PCI Mac

for what its worth I use 0.76mm leaded balls for reballing all of my PPC CPU's and that seems to have worked fine so far @herd goes into a bit more detail about the weird 0.89 balls found on factory fresh CPU's here :)...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

interesting! and how does the CPU show up in OpenFirmware once patched? does it just show up as PowerPC 60? as 7447/7448's do with the standard PowerLogix patch, or does it show up as a PowerPC 750 with all the L2 cache child node? and on that how did it show up in Linux was the L2 cache...

Testing 333MHz IBM 604ev 288in PGA module with G3 carrier for a PCI Mac

very interesting! so theres a look up table of sorts, its very interesting that for 2.0.3 apple did happen to add that 8 replacing one of the ?'s , perhaps PowerPC 608 was going to be the name for the G3 before it was renamed to the 750 (I do recall reading that it was called the 750 in the end...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

yeah Old World Macs thankfully dont have any sort of "halt on Unknown CPU" check like New World PowerMacs do, so they inherently dont need any patching for more modern CPU's (although of course on those systems even a most basic G3 upgrade will need some sort of 3rd party software to enable L2...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

I am pretty positive that it did not require any BootROM patching or NVRAMRC patches, I seem to recall even in my G3 beige, it just saw the 750GX ZIF, as a 750P ZIF with 1MB of "backside" L2 cache, even in OpenFirmware, and thats a system one *cannot* patch the BootROM on since it truly is read...

Testing 333MHz IBM 604ev 288in PGA module with G3 carrier for a PCI Mac

Ooh a BGA255 interposer for the 750GX? that could be quite fun in its own right, for upgrading Old world PCI Macs :) the PPC740L will work on a PowerMac 6500's motherboard, once ya adjust the vCore suitably...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

interesting, I very briefly had one of those 750GX ZIF's in my hand I posted a picture of my one earlier in this thread (the one being held by fingers with a messy background was my own picture :) ) heres a few extra shots I took of how various software saw the CPU as, all software (including...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

Awesome! Thank you for the juicy technical breakdown, this is the sort of thing I live for! another firmware patcher worth looking into is the Gigadesign's firmware patcher as I noticed that one does not check for a specific BootROM version it only checks for certains within a BootROM, so we...

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

there was both, a "halt on unknown PVR" any CPU with an unknown to the BootROM PVR, if you put in a 7410 or 7455 you get the same result and a separate check that does check for the 7400 PVR where it then beeps at you, remove this, and you will see the G3 Blue and white's latest BootROM does...

Interest in adapting 744x to 7400?

BTW on this front, the Pismo's latest firmware is 4.1.9 which is well supported by most of the BootROM CPU upgrade firmware patches out there, I would try the PowerLogix Firmware patcher first, and then the GigaDesigns one :) tho of course I would always make a backup of the BootROM first

    PPC750GX vs. PPC750GL?

thats very cool to see, even just from a novilty perspective, just to push the G3 to its maximum limits, it would be fun to see one in an MDD, because they have a 167Mhz bus and all that :) what software things did you have to figure out in the end, was it BootROM patches or OS X side software...

Partition Magic for SCSI emulated Macs?

yall are overcomplicating things majorly for something apple already provides as a boot time service :) https://macfaq.org/software/startup.shtml cmd-opt-shift-delete-(#): Boot from a SCSI device on the SCSI bus other than the disk selected in the Startup Disk control panel. The optional...

    Windows NT PPC on Macs

OS X works by way of platform experts and kext/drivers, for example if ya look at Xpostfacto it installs "PowerSurgePE.kext" and that driver is the platform driver for the 7300-9600 machines, or you may notice when booting OS X on your Lombard theres a GossamerPE mentioned when it says "found...

Interest in adapting 744x to 7400?

interesting :) I know the G3 is a 60x only CPU, what im wondering is for those who want to do this swap themselves, was it a straight swap, or does one have to change some resistors to change the bus mode, or does the CPU/PowerMac automatically take care of that?

7451 to 7455 iMac G4 CPU swap attempt (WIP)

interesting that yours also freezes! I also did this swap a few years back https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/uncooking-the-sunflower-seeds-first-generation-imac-g4-repair-cpu-replacement.2230902/ and mine also freezes pretty soon after booting, but I always chalked that up to the fact I...

Wanted: ROM dump of early production (especially 800MHz 2003) ATI graphics eMac

if you want to enable startup disk in MacOS X to show the OS 9 folder, just do an NVRAMRC script to append the MacRISC2 property onto the model identifier, this is what startup disk looks for when determining if to show OS 9 volumes, also on something like a PowerMac4,4 eMac it should enable you...

Interest in adapting 744x to 7400?

Oh awesome this is something me and @Daniël have been meaning to try out/have wanted to see done just for the novility of it, it is very awesome to see it works :) but I am also curious from a technical presepsctive, do Core Image ATI Radeon cards work? NVIDIA cards require a G4/Altivec to...

    Upgrading ZIF G3 to G4 (MPC7410)

I can confirm that if you solder a 7410 to a G3 Beige ZIF card it will fry the L2 cache controller, not the whole chip that worked fine in another system, but just no more L2 cache. the weird thing is there is a aftermarket G4 ZIF out there 550Mhz and 600Mhz, from IIRC PowerLogix, that does...
