I have good news.
I opened up a pristine Mac Mini G4 for comparison and noticed that the fan differed in rotation by 180°. The fan was otherwise in the right way. I also replaced the CW8124 with an UJ845 (giving the Mac Mini the ability to burn DVDs).
I turned the Mac Mini G4 on and it ran...
Such a pity.
And a word of defence for these much maligned batteries: they were great batteries in their day. They were just never designed to last 34 years. A Mac dealer back in the early '90s told me that 7 years' useful life is what you could expect out of a Macintosh then and this is what...
These are good points everyone. I can try install Mac OS X, if I can boot from an external FW drive and then check the heat sensors.
The fan is a very good point. I may very well have screwed it in the wrong way around. It would explain the constant fan and the machine turning off because it...
I replaced the HD on one of my rev. 1 Mac Mini G4s.
I put in an mSATA card with an IDE-adapter and set the jumper on it to slave. I have put mSATA cards into 2 previous Mas Mini G4s and these run well.
Now the fan is loud, it is continually on and it shuts down after 10 minutes. What was...
FirmTek/SeriTek are only really valuable when they can be used under SSW7-9. That being said, if you can get one at a reasonable price, then get one, they make good cards. I just wouldn't spend megabucks on a Mac OS X-only card when cards from other manufacturers might be cheaper, offer more...
(Apologies if there is already another thread on this topic. A quick search didn't reveal any...)

NICs are best use for the PDS slot in almost all Macs that have no other expansion slots. You can now access a file server easily via EtherTalk.
Make a LAN, connect a fast G4 to it and use that to download software from the Macintosh Garden for the SE/30.
I made up an Excel document [1] some...
How important is the word 'best'?
Do you absolutely have to have 24-bit colour and QuickDraw acceleration, nice though they are?
I ask because «settling» for a card without Quickdraw acceleration and 24-bit colour will halve the price of a card.
I run my IIfx at 1024x768 at 256 colours with a...
A thought that comes to mind is CarbonLib.
If I'm right, you'll to experiment a bit, say, PCMCIA drivers from SSW 8.1 or 8.6, Finder from SSW 7.6.1 and System from SSW 8.1 as well CarbonLib 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2.
If I remember correctly SSW 8.1 supports up to CarbonLib 1.2.
Have a look at this:

Those two long vertical bars between the 24 pins to the left/centre and the 4 analogue pins on the right are interesting.
I wonder whether this is a card has a modified port for a dedicated cable to a device of some sort?
