NetBoot OS 9 from a Modern Linux Server

Really appreciate you putting that together, I'll give it a go on my system and report back. It is interesting that Apple apparently didn't expend much effort trying to simplify USB booting. You would think the explosion of external USB peripherals after the iMac came out would have given them...

NetBoot OS 9 from a Modern Linux Server

Thanks all for the nice comments! 🙂 I'll try that on my iMac DV+. I had a heck of a time fiddling with USB in Open Firmware on the original iMac, everything I tried would just lock up OF. I couldn't tell if it was a 'me' problem, something with my USB devices, a computer-specific problem, or...

NetBoot OS 9 from a Modern Linux Server

I figured out a method to net-boot early New World ROM systems into OS 9 using modern server software. Instructions for how to do it are here: https://github.com/saybur/kea-mboot This is quite useful if you need to bootstrap an old Mac without a functional optical drive, or if you want to run...

Mac Plus not recognizing BlueSCSI after recap of analog board

Before going down the scope route I'd suggest reviewing the log file, which may give you a better idea of what's happening. They have a general troubleshooting guide as well. Enabling debugging should let you know if the Mac is successfully issuing SCSI commands.

    New LC475

They need to be in pairs: either 2x256K (512K total) or 2x512K (1M total). The battery is not rechargeable. I personally use modern Tadiran 1/2AA replacements from a reputable supplier (at least historically I've never seen one of theirs explode). @ArmorAlley listed some other good options. No...

What should a hobbyist-focussed AppleTalk router do?

Awesome! And your plan for development makes complete sense, appreciate the info.

What should a hobbyist-focussed AppleTalk router do?

That looks great! Glad I'm not the only one who dislikes blank space on PCBs  Do you have an idea of what the licensing on the hardware/software will be for this?

    New LC475

You're correct on the 4MB main memory, but the LC 475 uses separate memory (VRAM) for video; it came from the factory with 512K (2x256K) but someone must have swiped the sticks at some point in the computer's history. Like @ArmorAlley said, having more is better. I personally use the default...

    New LC475

Congrats on your new computer! The 475 is a great machine, hope you enjoy it. I haven't done it personally but powering with a DC supply is a reasonable approach. The mAcTX LC can convert an ATX PSU to work with your computer, then you can use a PicoPSU and the DC brick. mAcTX LC is open...

GBSCSI - A cheap(er?) solution to replacement storage

I don't have my spec copies in front of me so this is just from memory, but I think SCSI-2 may have been less specific about the drive strengths of active negation drivers than the later revisions. Is that where the above chart came from? The design does look to correctly run the OR-tied lines...

What is this SMD that’s broken DOS PCI Card

Looks like an inductor to me. For identification this might be helpful: For testing: (I seriously doubt you need 1%, Google suggests 20% is more typical) https://electronics.stackexchange.com/a/417363

Hootswitch, a (work-in-progress) Apple Desktop Bus switch

Not as much time for projects recently (life/work/etc) but I was able to get preliminary support added for controlling a Hootswitch over USB from a modern computer. I did something like this ages ago with a clunky Java client. This new approach uses Chrome and the Web Serial API. Remote control...

Control Panel for CH Products Pro Pedals ADB?

Just following along for interest, but does that library apply to ADB peripherals? I was under the impression those generally required their own drivers (but I'd be pleased if I was wrong on that).

    Identifying Flyback Replacements

I've got a graphite Apple Studio Display 17" (M6496) that flickers out at random, the image snapping to the center then slowly re-expanding over the next few seconds. This unit is on its original caps, but based on the symptom and other people's reports of problems with this model I'm assuming...

    Quantum conundrum in four stanzas

There are some who suggest a small drop is in order, I can't say of that I am a supporter, All these steps feel like a bit of delay, there are, alas, few ways to stop Quantum decay. Maybe its time to to get a newer device, There are many to choose from, they are quite nice. For spinning iron...

Macproxy v24.8 release and Docker image

Thank you for the ongoing work on this, and what you're doing with your other projects to keep these old computers talking on modern networks. It is much appreciated!

    Startup key combinations

It has been a really long time since I tried NetBSD for Mac but I don't think that image is a bootable. See http://www.netbsd.org/ports/mac68k/booter-manual/index.html. The first CD image, by name, should be picked on startup. Try renaming the OS 8 disk to get it higher in priority. You might...
