    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

Recently I was shown a horror story of capacitors inside the screen inverter board & display unit going bad and ruining someones old powerbook. I then realised that although my screen was new old stock, the caps were still 30 years old and have a shelf life. I opened it back up and replaced...

@Rajel FYI I got my replacement screen from https://www.applemacparts.co.uk/ - but I checked that part number and they don't have your screen unfortunately :(

@Rajel Could you help me out with the cf/ide adaptor you use? Thanks

    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

@Rajel Oh I wonder if it is just due to the CF brand whether it boots or not. I've just got hold of some WD Silicondrive CF cards so I'll test them out. I'm too afraid to replace the CPU to be honest, probably not worth it as I doubt many apps use the FPU anyway. Sorry I've already lost my list...

PowerBook 190 not powering on after reassembly.

I bet it is a depleted PROM battery. Unplug the battery and it will power on as soon as you plug the power in.

    PowerBook Maintenance Checklist and advice?

FYI another reason you can get lines on the screen is a faulty/worn display cable, these things seem to rot away over the years.

    Does anyone re-build Powerbook batteries?

Thanks sutekh, I had a read and it's very impressive, you are a great electronic engineer. I am good at physically doing things (I have put a battery pack together where all the electronic parts and connectors were intact) But unfortunately in this case, the insides of my pack were one big...

    Does anyone re-build Powerbook batteries?

Hi all, As you might know I recently refurbished my PB 190, but unfortunately the battery was too far gone to save any of the internals, they were simple too far gone. I have saved the case, as to not have a gaping hole in the side. I am just wondering if anyone in the community re-builds...

    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

I just had 2x VL2330 batteries arrive in the post. Soldered them together the same as the originals and plugged it in. I've set the system time and I guess I'll let them charge for a bit before testing if the date and time are kept when power is lost.

    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

Sfiera, The first part has gone perfectly... 1. I put the PCMCIA CF card reader & 2gb industrial Cisco cf card in the slot. The Mac recognised it and asked to initialise, I did so as Standard Macintosh 2gb. 2. I then simply drag 'n' dropped the entire HDD contents to the new CF drive. 3...

    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

Just with the original HDD. I've ordered a CF to IDE adaptor for it. Will transfer the original HDD to CF via a PCMCIA card, and then put in the adapter. You mentioned mixed results, could you elaborate? Thx

    Powerbook 190cs full refurbishment & re-cap

Hey guys, Here is my post about refurbishing this lovely little machine. I've never worked on a PB before so it was a learning experience. I didn't photograph the MANY brittle plastic tabs/screw mounts I fixed with ABS glue - but yes, I had to fix many. Without the glue the machine would not...

    Powerbook 190 w/Ethernet & PCMCIA boot

Yeah cheers for coming back to life to follow up this post! I was thinking about trying this in my 190 but now I know not to waste the money, so thanks lol :)  I am going to use an IDE > CF instead, I'm sure this will perform ideally.

Yeah these cables are so delicate! Perhaps I should massage it in olive oil before sealing it back away lol :)
