HFS does allow me to create a 4GB partition, though. The system just won't boot from it. I'll be trying out 8.1 later. For some reason, the 8.1 retail image off the Garden didn't work for me. I have an 8.1 CD around here somewhere, so I'll try that later on.

I don't know the answer, but my WGS80 (same computer, basically) has a similar problem. So if you DO find a replacement, I'm interested.

I suspect the reason its minimum spec is the IIci has less to do with the hardware and more to do with the software. I'm speculating here, but perhaps the bundled software required a 32-bit clean Mac, for example?

IIRC, you did not have to remove the internal drive to use an Apple TechStep, which I thought relied on this same mechanism.

ID 0 is last in boot priority. The Mac prefers a bootable device at ID 6, then ID 5, and so on. The solution is to specify the startup disk in the Startup Disk control panel, which is then stored in PRAM. If that has not been done, what you're describing is expected behavior. I'm not sure why...

Who makes your network card? Do you have the right drivers? Apple bundled drivers in System 7.5 for some, but not all.
