Should I get a Rominator II?

Could be a RAM issue. E.g., my SE/30 had trouble with lockups, and I just couldn’t get to the bottom of it. After endless fussing, and with me on the point of abandoning the machine as a lost cause, an experienced member on here advised me to change the RAM (there was a thread about it, but of...

FPU, software, and a Classic II

The Classic II was in a way my entrance point to Apple products, so I have a real soft spot for it. It is sort of gratifying to see how much the darned thing is able to do, despite its limitations, and after all these years. The thread I found after posting and that I pointed to above interests...

FPU, software, and a Classic II

I’ve been sitting on the fence as to whether to order an FPU card for my Classic II. I suppose my question is whether any software actually usable on a Classic II makes use of an FPU. Is there a list somewhere handy (old magazines, whatever) of FPU-aware 68k software that would help me settle...

Can this 575 logic board be saved?

It might be worth observing that if it happens to be installed in a Color Classic, like many 575 boards tend to be, it won’t boot to a screen without further work.

    Sorbet Leopard Install Problems

Sorry, I didn’t see this until just now. I copied the image file to a usb stick on an intel iMac. On the PowerBook, contrary to the instructions, I didn’t create a new partition (couldn’t see the point in my case) but simply installed on my existing single partition drive via restore in Disk...

    Centris or Quadra 650

That’s interesting. I had/ still have a Q650 as well, but didn’t know this. I think it’s a great machine for its time.

    Centris or Quadra 650

From the Developer’s note: Summary of New Features 1 The Macintosh Quadra 610 and Macintosh Quadra 650 computers are essentially higher-performance versions of the Macintosh Centris 610 and Macintosh Centris 650. The changes in the new machines include ■ faster processors: 25 MHz in the...

    Centris or Quadra 650

Quadra will have full 68040 and onboard Ethernet (AAUI); Centris probably neither.

Any known caveats with a IIsi?

To Dana: and they say you can’t multitask in System 7!

Any known caveats with a IIsi?

I’d personally recommend something like a Quadra 650 for A/UX, which is also a vastly more robust and expandable machine generally. A IIsi will run A/UX, but it will be kind of slow. Where a IIsi really shines in my view is running System 6, with a Nubus video card and a decent monitor — just my...

    Sorbet Leopard Install Problems

I downloaded it from the Garden today and installed it on a PB 15” 1.67 without any trouble. The thing is a bit odd because it’s not an actual installer that you get, but a disk image that has to be installed by Disk Utility, the upshot being that you need a separate boot drive with an OS (I...

    Daystar Genesis MP

Via xpostfacto, I’ve had OSX (X.2?) running on an 8600/300 with the 604ev, and it wasn‘t what you’d call snappy. Some of that may have been due to the graphics limitations, as the 8600’s PCI slots are compromised somehow, plus the cards I had available wouldn‘t have been especially high end at...

    Silencing Macintosh II

I am glad to hear that it is still doing its duty! The ps wasn’t recapped, but it was thoroughly cleaned out. I used a handheld shower and hot, hot water. Lots of brown water emerged. Gallons. Fish died in the Thames. It had to done, though, as the fellow I got it from was a chain smoker, had...

    Silencing Macintosh II

Yes, I had a Macintosh II that had been upgraded to a IIfx, but the machine still had what I took to be the original power supply in there. Certainly that fan did not slow down on idle. Oh no. It was lift-off all the way. Another of our lot on here bought it from me and loves the machine, but I...

Do the dual 604e processors fit (and run BeOS)? These would be more common than the Daystar Quad.

G4 cube won‘t boot off SATA SSD

I am pretty sure I had to set my HDD as slave, because the replacement DVD-RW was master and couldn’t be changed — or something like that. It was a long time ago, but anyway, it was a pain and the pain is etched on my memory because the darned thing had to be disassembled again to be put right...

G4 cube won‘t boot off SATA SSD

I seem to recall (from replacing a DVD in mine years ago) that the Cube is uncommonly fussy about the Master/Slave configuration of its drives. You might want to check that all is well there.
