1. Once, I bricked my beige G3 Desktop by installing Dantz Retrospect software. Afterwards it came back to life only after proper use of the CUDA reset button. I remember that there is a recommended sequence to use this button.
2. Large amounts of RAM on old Macs cause an unfamiliar prolonged...
I would like to add to 6502's comment, that it is highly recpmmended to use an SSD or other Flash Memory to replace the primary hard disk drive in any (vintage or not so vintage) computer you would like to put into frequent use. Even a ten years old Macbook benefits so very much from fast mass...
The LCIII's clockspeed is set by some resistors soldered to the mainboard, similar to the LC475. The clockspeed is not set in the CPU itself. You may identify the clockspeed just by looking at the resistor setting. Many LCIII units with a regular 25 MHz CPU can be overclocked to 33 MHz easily by...
I found the female power connector soldered to the 180's mainboard to easily cause a slack joint. It can be damaged by bending the contacts, the solder pads in the mainboard can become loose, and also the contacts may corrode from the 3 A uptake of the PowerBook. My first PowerBook was pulled...
Great thread, I really enjoyed the read. Thank you for sharing!
Suggestion of an »earthly idea what application you could use for a modem in a Blackbird in this day and age«: Consider to use an address manager application (like »Address Manager« or »CoMa Mac«) that does not publish your contact...
The beige G3 mainboard has a slot for a video RAM expansion. You said there are intermittent issues with the video. You might check if the video RAM is o. K. If you have a working PCI video card in the system and if you encounter problems with the internal video circuittry, you might disable the...
Hello, thank you for your support! Currently I am waiting for the ordered short adapter to arrive. I will post any results after my next attempt to fix the machine.
Could we probably combine the creation of a »sticky« with the creation of a stub in the wiki which links to the stickie in the forums? As written before, the wiki is a pretty good tool to write an ecyclopedia. The wiki is made to ease a lot of tasks involved into collaborative care for...
O. K., now I have got the SATA-mSATA adaptor and stacked it with the IDE-SATA bridge adaptor in its factory set state of »cable select« mode. With this combination the Mac mini correctetly recognizes the mSATA SSD as device ID1 and the optical drive as device ID0. However, one problem solved...
BBEdit (light) supports AppleScript and allows to combine custom search and replace patterns. I use it ever since I got hands on this efficient text processing application. It is available from versions running under 7.1 (if not earlier) up to the most recent Mac OS X.
TTF font files from that period were different for Windows and Macintosh, also. It is possible to conveniently convert Wondows TTF to Mac TTF and vice versa, for example with the Mac application FontClerk. Fontographer is professional tool to create or customize TTF and PS fonts.
There was a software available for the purpose to easily toggle the visibility of files. One suggested use was to simply hide files from other users (once upon a time there were computers with just one single user account…). Unfortunately I can not remember the name. The application icon looked...
Dear fellows, I absolutely love you. I have enjoyed reading your illuminative treatise on possible implementations and uses of the 9200 chip in the Mini. Thank you!
Consider to look for a piece of rubber tube of appropriate size, as used in a chemical laboratory, or fuel hose from a garage. O-ring seals are available in nearly any diameter and thickness. You could use a stack of O-ring seals. You may choose the size, specified as inside diameter x cross...
Hi, thank you for your reply! The interconnect board appears to be a multilayer PCB with very tiny traces. The JAE KX14-50K11D connector from the interconnect board to the optical drive is surface mounted. I would have to disconnect pin 47 of the JAE connector to set the optical drive to ID1...
I have put a small SATA SSD along with a SATA-IDE bridge adaptor inside a Mac mini G4. Now it does not recognize the optical drive sharing the same Mac's IDE host any more. Obviously the SATA-IDE bridge is not configured to properly support Cable Select to set Device ID1 (slave). In the Mac mini...
As long as you do not have appropriate software on the LCIII to receive files via the serial port, you might use a PC software to write to a 3.5" floppy disk. If your LCIII accepts and reads DOS formatted disks, it might work out of the box, as long as the Mac data has been appropriately...
Actually, it is possible to boot a Mac mini G4 into Mac OS 9. Might this permit use of appropriate Radeon driver software to run the Mac mini's Radeon 9200 chip in a dual display mode? If someone has this configuration (Mac mini with Mac OS 9 and ATI OS 9 Mac Software Update January 2005) up and...
Hello, I would like to connect two displays simultaneously to the same Mac mini, using a DVI to DVI + VGA Y-cable. The cable splits the DVI port into a DVI port (digital) and a VGA port (analogue). Actually, I want do this with an early Intel machine, but the same should work with the G4...
You may also try to put the slider on the battery in a direction to fit the slider's rounded shape to the rounded shape of the battery case. This way you can leave the slider always on the battery case. It will fit properly into the PowerBook and should not slide off inadvertently, also.
