Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

Success! - but more Questions :( First off all - adjusting the voltage fixed the wobbly screen issue - Hooray! But this did not work like I expected. Reading through the Classic Mac Repair Notes, I found that moving PP1 counter-clockwise should increase the voltage - although it does not...

    Hibernate Mac OS 9?

Just checked on a 2003 G4 MDD and it's the same. Since this is the last OS9 Machine, maybe they did not implement the Suspend to disk feature at all? Or it's because this is a Desktop with no danger of a battery running out of power while the system is seeping.

    Hibernate Mac OS 9?

Yes - even Mac OS 8.6 that came with the first Blueberry iBook was able to hibernate. This is "Suspend to RAM" of course. If you're talking about "Supdend to disk" then I cannot remember if this was possible.

    Macintosh classic AB woes

I just changed this part yesterday. No socket and it works. - See this thread. Try not to heat it up more than necessary, but this should be standard practice anyway. BTW, I used a CNY17-3 instead of a CNY17G-3 because it was readily available. As you can see, I'm following the same general...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

I have now replaced the Diodes and the Optocoupler and it did not help. The screen is still wobbly on Disk (SCSI2SD) Activity. The Picture now seems to be a bit narrower on the top too, I did not see this before. Two things are notable: I could not get a CNY17G-3, at least not quickly. So...

What's inside a KeySpan serial adapter?

Knew it - just when I found the missing firmware files on the internet, I remembered where I saved the according archive a few years back. So with the firmware files it just works. The Serial ports are /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 - easy ;-)

What's inside a KeySpan serial adapter?

While looking for the Linux firmware files I found this: Hacking the Keyspan USB Serial Adaptor Relevant and interesting! I'm still looking for the firmware files. I'm pretty sure they used to hide somewhere in the "nonfree" firmware packages of Debian - just seem to have vanished though ;-)

What's inside a KeySpan serial adapter?

Good that you asked - it is not as I remembered. It does work but you need the firmware files too! You can enable these specific Keyspan adapters very deep down in the Kernel config if you build your own Kernel. But since the Linux Distribution usually configure everything and the kitchen sink...

What's inside a KeySpan serial adapter?

With Linux it doesn't. Plug it in and it just appears as two serial ports. - For all distributions I tried this is.

Overclocking a Performa 630 DOS Compatible

@Brett B. - Very true. With a bit of patience and luck you can build your past days dream machine for almost nothing - as long as you are not behind things like an original 128k or a Lisa, or a 20th Anniversary Mac etc. I've had this 630 for almost 20 years, when it was thrown out of a...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

Thanks again @davidg5678 - I will do as you recommended. First replace all suspicious parts and only then try to turn up the voltage. The AB I recapped was not looking too bad and was working (albeit wobbly) before. The caps were leaking just a bit from their underside and the goo was only...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

Any more Information about how much you turned it up? I have not yet measured the 5 and 12 Voltage rails but I will do that when I have read up about how to do that - hopefully tomorow. Somewhere I read that one has to be very, very careful to not fry anything permanently when increasing the...

Overclocking a Performa 630 DOS Compatible

Wow, 196 MB sounds impressive, If I can find SIMMs that big. There remains the question what software to install that needs that amount of RAM on System 7.5.5 :-) It would probably easier to fill up RAM while using MacOS 8.1 - Only I never could get the DOS card running under that system...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

Thanks @davidg5678 for confirming the placement of the Optocoupler and also Links to the part numbers! I know enough electronics to know what diodes and optocouplers do, but I'm not confident enough to be sure with what to replace them with if I don't have an exact part number. Now I can order...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

OK I see. The thing is, I have another board from a 110 V Classic, that looks a bit different (Its number is 630-0525). The flyback transformer looks different and capacitor values are also not the same. I take it, this is just the other revision I have read about. How can I tell that, and what...

Overclocking a Performa 630 DOS Compatible

Yess! - This sounds encouraging as hell :) - I'm not sure if I include another Fan, besides the Power Supply, but I will definitely add a heatsink. The 486 has one already, the 68LC040 does not. I've read something about the RAM limits not being that strict already. I found the 32 MB Sticks...

Overclocking a Performa 630 DOS Compatible

Hi! I have a Performa 630 DOS Compatible that I want to "spec to the maximum" - at least as far as possible. It came with the DOS Card and a Comm-Slot Ethernet card. I increased the RAM to the maximum, replaced the HD with a CF card and was given an AV-card and tuner for it. Now i secured a...

Mac Classic with a wobbly screen after recap

Hi! I have a Mac Classic that is working fine but has a wobbly screen. The "wobblyness" is more apparent at the top and can be linked to Harddrive activity. Moving e.g. a white window in front of a dark background does not skew or wobble the screen! I'm in the process of completely...
