Rumor I usually see is that the colors came from the United Colors of Benetton, which was an event sponsor at the time. I don't know if this was ever confirmed though.
You could at the very least try it with a blank, as far as I know the drive won't attempt to read just by receiving power, the computer has to actually take the action.
The IIfx has the SWIM, so both 1.44MB disks and 800K disks should work fine, and it should accept both System 6 and System 7...
I'm not sure if I'm missing it, but it doesn't sound like there's enough hard drive activity there for booting. To me it sounded more like just the drive's startup routine, likely reading some data off the drive or performing a test.
Have you tried putting in a floppy disk to see if it makes any...
You can use the official service manual - https://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/legacy/classic_ii.performa_200.pdf
Specifically you would want the procedure at PDF Page #107, or Page 18 of the Adjustments section.
Yes, the ROM slot is between the modem and RAM slots. The card has an 8 wire cable coming off for power and signaling to the backlight inverter.
Yes, although the computer usually needs a keypress to power it on, so you may need to connect the keyboard if you want to test it past the powered...
Is this the M5120 with the backlight addition, or the M5126? Only the M5126 had a backlight, though you could get a backlit display with accompanying ROM card to add a backlight to M5120
The system will not function properly without power via the battery connector, due to both the current...
After that last revision, I've made some more changes and order up the next batch of boards. Once they eventually arrive from overseas and they're tested good, I should have a lot more available.
As for the finished design, I think it's nearly there...
Interesting. I'll have to try that with one of mine. I'll admit, I've never actually tested either of mine because I wasn't sure if they were any good, so I just tossed them aside with the original Portable batteries.
It might actually just be a test pad rather than a via. I fiddled with mine a bit, and it seems more like a flat disc that just lifts right off the board.
I can't see anything missing from the schematic though.
You have:
R37 - Feedback Resistor
R36 - Isolation Resistor
C56 and C50 - Load Capacitors
U7-3 and U7-4 - Out and In
Y1 - Crystal
Typically that's all you need to use a crystal like this.
The M5120 is similar to the M5126, but differs slightly. So if you end up buying a kit for the M5120 for you would be missing the 4.7uF capacitor and would have some extras of other values.
I'm sure you've already found this list, but here are the capacitors for the M5126:
SMD Electrolytic:
4x...
Sorry, I thought we were talking about the right side connection of C56. That one is a blind via, so it's hard to tell, but I'm guessing it goes to R37 since there doesn't seem to be anything else connecting it.
It definitely appears to go to ground on my board.
It does not appear to be a blind via either. I can see the two vias below C56 match up with the two under Y1. The blind vias appear to be plated/plugged.
I put a 470k resistor between battery voltage and the VREF, and now I get a stable 1.23V and ~5.2V no matter what I put the battery voltage at. Getting closer...
You still have it? On mine it looks like the 1.2V reference varies based on battery voltage, which definitely should not happen. I replaced it which gave it a small boost, but it's still not stable.
Right now I'm looking at op-amp output A which I haven't traced out but I'm guessing is a...
