Great point - along with figuring out some kind of 'active cooling' (aka fan), I'll definitely look into installing some heatsinks on the various chips in there too.
Also, that's cool to know that you wrote the LEM article - is this the one you wrote? If yes, I'm grateful - I'm writing my own...
Howdy everyone,
I've recently become the caretaker of two Apple /// systems. One is already in good working order other than a wonky 'O' key which I need to get sorted, and the other is in rougher shape (couple broken-off keys, dead PSU, etc.).
I spent some time playing with the working one...
Hi @jajan547! I'm a little late to this party, but if you're still making kits, I'd love to by one (or two, if you have an extra to spare). Let me know!
Thanks,
Huxley
Update: I just purchased a set of feet from this eBay listing. It doesn't specifically state that they're good for the Monitor ///, but the pics look similar enough that it's worth a try. Hope this helps someone else too!

Hi everyone,
I recently became the owner / caretaker of a shocking large quantity of Apple /// stuff - two CPU's, two Monitor ///'s, a ton of books, floppies, etc. All the gear is in decent shape, but both of the Monitor ///'s are missing at least one or two of their blocky rubber feet, which...
Oh, is that correct? I always thought the smaller layout came with the 128k / 512k, and the larger layout with the 10-key pad came in with the Mac Plus.
EDIT: Yep, turns out there are two versions of the "smaller" 1st-gen Mac keyboard, before the Plus-style board with the 10-key pad:
Version 1...
Good info, thanks! I'd certainly be curious what you decide to part with, but at this point I'm basically having to play Tetris with every item going into my storage locker, and will likely be looking to downsize some surplus gear of my own in the near future. Do share once you're ready though...
In a classic "friend of a friend of a friend" scenario, I got a heads-up last night that someone in my town was looking to offload "some old computer stuff" before it just went to the local e-waste place. Without knowing much other than "I think they mentioned a small Mac of some kind," I agreed...
Daaaang this is awesome - congrats! I also always feel weird about buying sealed vintage gear, my heart is torn between preserving it as-is vs. opening it and trying it out. Given that I have a Quadra 950, I think I'd have to break this open, but it would hurt a little!
Thanks guys! Given the different switches, I might do a side-by-side comparison video using my good microphone - would be a fun addition to my retro-tech YouTube channel!

No crazy story here, but still: Stopped into my favorite local junk store while I was out running errands today, and I snagged an Apple Extended Keyboard, one of the greatest mechanical keyboards ever made along with a classic Apple mouse. The keyboard needs a little cleanup but otherwise looks...
Hey, thanks for commenting!
I'm super slammed over the next few weeks (work travel, incoming family visit, holiday stuff), but I'm hoping to actually get to test my twin /// units early next year (or maybe in the pre-New Year's downtime if I'm lucky). As of now the only oscilloscope I own is...
Quick update on the case damage: I took a closer look at the underside (see pic below) and now have a better sense of what happened. My Portable was already missing a small chunk of plastic from the left-rear corner - the original owner who sold it to me back in ~2007 when I lived in Albuquerque...
Wanted to post a good news / bad news update:
The Good News: the battery purchased via eBay from @360alaska arrived today and appears to be working great! I dropped it into the Portable and it fired right up, and now doing things like inserting floppies or running programs isn't bombing the...
Thanks for the kind words and that link! What a wild story - I'm only about halfway through the thread and it's riveting
Yeah I wondered about that. I've never owned (or even used / been in the company of) an Apple ///, but I couldn't remember seeing many recent pics of them with the keypad...
Early this year, a colleague reached out to let me know that his father was finally getting ready to retire (at age 91!), and was looking for a new home for his old gear. The retiree had owned a successful architecture studio in Canada for many years, and until the late 1990's, he ran the entire...
Hey guys, thanks for the useful info - I hate to admit it, but it's starting to feel more and more like my Portable battery died due to neglect
I am intrigued by this eBay listing for a replacement battery - there's not much info to go on, and the pics seem to show a 3D-printed case...
Quick Update II: I just pulled out the main battery and stuck the voltmeter on the contacts, and it seems to only be putting out ~1.05 volts - that seems kinda low, right? I'm going to leave it plugged into the charger for a couple hours and test it again, but I'm definitely suspicious that...
Quick update: I just broke out my trusty voltmeter and tested the output from the Macintosh Portable power brick, and it seems to be holding steady right at 7.5 volts, which I think is good for this model, right?
So I was hoping to enter the "Portables Week" contest over on Reddit with my beautiful backlit Macintosh Portable. I ran over to my storage locker and grabbed the Portable this morning and fired it up with my SCSI2SD connected to the external SCSI port. I should note that this Portable has a...
