Recapped my 128k analog board, now it turns on but the display won't show anything

Hi all, I'm at the stage of my self-taught-repair-skills journey where I'm just knowledgable enough to be dangerous. Case in point: I have two 128k Macs - one "standard" and one which was upgraded to "Fat Mac" status, and both had issues: - The Fat Mac would power on but it would take several...

Levco MonsterMac with SCSI and lots of dirt

I found a similarly-equipped MonsterMac a few months ago! I haven't had time to play with it yet, but your post is inspiring me to pull it out of storage and see what shape it's in. If nothing else, I'm quite curious to see if my ROM version matches yours. Fun project! Huxley

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

I can't guarantee anything of course, but at least visually the board looks great. Your point is valid though, I'll take a much closer look at those traces and see if anything looks amiss. I actually haven't, that's a good idea. The board and internals are so clean and new-looking, I didn't...

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Hi again everyone, Thanks to @rickrob ’s generosity I was able to install 4 megs of “known good” RAM last night, along with the replacement ROM chips I sourced from eBay. Unfortunately the behavior is still the same: no chime, and shifting patterns of garbage / digital noise onscreen. I’ve...

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Okay, I've got a good news / bad news update: Good news: I've carefully reflowed the major solder points on the analog board, which seems to have fixed the issue of the display going black randomly (and/or whenever the machine was moved even slightly) Bad news: I received my fresh set of eBay...

    BeBox lives after 2+ years!

Hey @Ortho'sDeli - curious if you ever proceeded with getting the "cap" from your BeBox scanned for 3D-printer-replication? I'd love to piggyback off your work and get my two missing caps replaced! :) Huxley

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Yeah makes sense. I went ahead and ordered a new set of ROM's - looking forward to swapping them in and seeing if the behavior changes. If not, I'll try swapping the RAM next... Huxley

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Just did a quick check and it reads at 5.18 volts on pin 6 of the floppy port - maybe slightly high, but within spec? I did also notice that the display turns on/off if the analog board is moved even a tiny amount, so I'm definitely going to re-flow the solder joins on the main cable connectors...

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

That's an excellent point, thank you! I took the motherboard out and gave it a nice cleaning today, and also re-seated the RAM sticks after wiping their contacts with 99% alcohol. I've also done a visual inspection of the motherboard and analog board, and I'm not seeing any obvious issues - no...

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Great suggestions and info, guys - much appreciated! I cracked the machine open yesterday and gave it a quick blow-out with my handheld air compressor - a fair bit of dust and hairballs flew away. Now that it's opened up, I'll spend some time this evening visually inspecting everything for...

Newly-acquired Mac Plus displays shifting garbage when powered on

Hi all! An acquaintance of my wife reached out this weekend to say that they were at a yard sale and had spotted "an old Mac for $20 - do you want it?" Obviously we said YES, and it turned out to be a lovely Mac Plus, complete with keyboard, mouse, and an ImageWriter II. Not bad! The Mac...

    NewtHack

I'm just dropping by to confirm that this worked beautifully for me, and my NewtHack is registered! I would very much like to pay the original developer if he's interested in such a thing - @intric8, please let us know if he gets back to you. I don't want to hound the guy or throw money at him...

    Screen Saver in Attract Mode?

I have nothing of value to add here, other than saying that I love your idea and I would absolutely do the same thing, if someone can suggest a good option for displaying something interesting that isn't static on screen... Huxley

Probably a dumb question: is there a faster way to set the year than tapping 312 times?

Hahah true, I can hold down the arrow button, but... it... changes... very... slowly... Also, HOW DID YOU GET TO THE OPTIONS IN YOU SCREENSHOT?! The only way I know to set the date/year is via these steps that start in the Clock app: Now I legit feel like I'm losing my mind :ROFLMAO...

Probably a dumb question: is there a faster way to set the year than tapping 312 times?

Every now and then I pop some fresh batteries into my trusty Newton 2100, and have some fun with it. However, there's one dumb that that always bugs me: when it comes back from a long period of no power, the date resets back to 1998, and the only way I've been able to set the year to 2024 is by...

Great deals DO still exist. I just bought a Mac 512k with a Levco MonsterMac 2MB + SCSI upgrade for $50!

Thanks! In all honesty I wasn't even really planning to haggle (I would've happily paid the $60 asking price even without the Monster Mac upgrade), but the clerk at the counter casually commented that it had been there for a couple weeks and hadn't sold, "probably because it's damaged on the...

Great deals DO still exist. I just bought a Mac 512k with a Levco MonsterMac 2MB + SCSI upgrade for $50!

Great question! I'm not entirely sure - I powered it up briefly at the store and it did flash a Happy Mac, but the rest of the boot sequence was a bizarre image of just a bunch of crazy black-and-white scribbles. It did get to a desktop after ~30 seconds of the weird 'art,' at which point I...

Great deals DO still exist. I just bought a Mac 512k with a Levco MonsterMac 2MB + SCSI upgrade for $50!

They might not be quite as plentiful as in years past, but great deals do still exist! I found this semi-rough but functional Mac 512k at a local junk shop today - it was priced at $60 but they accepted a $50 offer. Although it did not come with a keyboard and mouse, it DID come with something...

    BeBox lives after 2+ years!

Ooooh - yes, mine came like this and I've never had the caps. I've definitely daydreamed about finding a way to get replacements 3D printed. I have no personal knowledge or experience with 3D printing / modeling, but if you're willing to use yours as a model and you have some new ones made up, I...

    BeBox lives after 2+ years!

Ooooh - another BeBox owner?! Here's mine, also a dual-66MHz model. Mine is running well with all-original hardware, although the BlinkenLights have never worked in the (nearly) 20 years that I've owned this machine - they bounce a couple times during POST, but never bounce during actual usage...
