    quick gazelle-vs-alchemy graphics question

@Powerbase dunno. I did enough searching to get here https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/soldering-new-vram-onto-quadra-630-motherboard.31632/post-523974 but don't have time to ingest that document at the moment.

    quick gazelle-vs-alchemy graphics question

My interpretation of those benchmarks is that the ATI graphics chip on the Gazelle board handily outperforms it's predecessor, Apple's Valkyrie chip on the Alchemy board, regardless of bus speed. I did not experience any stability issues with my Alchemy board at 50MHz.

ATI Radeon 9250 PCI cards, converting from 64-bit to 128-bit and other details

There's an error in my table above that I wish I could correct; 16 (4 x 4) of the 56-ohm resistor packs are required, not 12. Not sure how I screwed up such basic math, must have been up late that night. Anyway, thinking I needed 12, I ordered 15 from Digi-Key, meaning I was one short. I angrily...

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

By the way, they did actually build and sell the red card, I found a sold Mercari listing as evidence: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m27008253405 LG52M3 is silkscreened on the upper right corner of the top of the board, if you search for that you'll find there was also a Kuroutoshikou version...

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

Initial results not good. I programmed the 39VF020, popped it in the socket, programmed the AT24C02D (not an 02B, surely it can't be that picky?), soldered to the board, installed in Quicksilver, I get a bong and a black screen. Never initializes video output. Out of patience for now, will come...

I would give it a vinegar bath. Just the regular 5% from the grocery store, submerge and scrub with a toothbrush. Might need a dental pick or something to scrape any stubborn hard corrosion from component legs. Should need less than 10 minutes in the vinegar; probably closer to 5. I rinse...

ATI Radeon 9250 PCI cards, converting from 64-bit to 128-bit and other details

I checked the Winbond W9425G6EH and Elixir N2DS25616CT (which is Nanya, TIL) datasheets just to make sure there weren't any obvious incompatibilities. I found that Winbond specifies 2.5V +/- 0.2V for DDR400 (200MHz) but Nanya/Elixir wants 2.6V +/- 0.1V to run at that speed. It would probably be...

ATI Radeon 9250 PCI cards, converting from 64-bit to 128-bit and other details

I wanted to play with some of the last/fastest classic Mac OS-compatible PCI video cards, so I managed to find a pair of Radeon 9250s. I feel like these used to be plentiful and cheap, but they seem to have gotten much rarer and more expensive. Of course, because I'm looking for projects, I only...

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

Well, now I'm invested. The ROM on there was a 39VF010, which will be a problem for adoption by the retrocomputing masses unless someone can reduce the ROM size like @dosdude1 is working on for the VT6421-based cards. I hope I am on the nice list and @finkmac claus brings me a Christmas present 😇

Is this too much $ and work for a noob.

+1 on the SE as the best first compact Mac. They're cheap, durable, compatible, and expansion cards are fun.

G3 AIO / Molar Mac Appreciation Thread

Yep, I'm a fan. I was lucky enough to snag one back when they were dirt cheap. Unfortunately I did the internal display mod to use a PCI video card and I really hacked it up in the process, because I was a teenager. I tore it down a few months ago and found some replacement cables for it, just...

Dual head VidCard for DA QS & MDD Suggestions?

Yeah, I don't think there's any overlap between OS 9 acceleration and dual-link DVI. I have a flashed Quadro4 900 XGL; it's basically a Geforce4 Ti 4600 with two single-link DVI ports instead of DVI and ADC. So it will do 1920x1200 but not 2560x1440.

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

Thank you. These Projovian things are a pain. Luckily all the generic 3512 boards seem to have the SOIC footprint, so it's a better situation than the VIA 6421 cards. Soldering still required, though.

    Mathey MSATA-13UMAC IDE/SATA card

Nice work @dosdude1! Is the serial EEPROM still required? That's a big hurdle to these being widely accessible. @NJRoadfan I have not done an exhaustive amount of testing, but the handful of SATA HDDs and SSDs I have tested with, which are mostly SATA II and III devices, have not had any issues...

    Bitcoin Mining on Mac Classic

@adespoton No matter how much AI you throw at it, mining bitcoin on anything but the most efficient modern hardware costs more to run than the bitcoin value it generates.
