I have three working PowerBook 500 series now. PowerBook 540c with PowerPC CPU Card and 32MB memory module, 320MB HD, Hosiden LCD (Active) PowerBook 540c with Full 68040 (w/FPU) overclocked to 40MHz and 32MB memory module, 160MB HD, Sharp LCD (Active) PowerBook 520c with 8MB memory module...

The center clutch cover on the PowerBook Duos is listed as a disposable part that should be replaced when the PowerBook Duo is serviced. This is because the little clips on it break off easily when removing it. Unfortunately for us, these are no longer made. I have a few with broken clips. Time...

    PowerBook 520c/540c backlight interchangeable?

Decided against it as I didn't want to shove another board in there right now. Considered designing a new inverter board altogether with only LED support (CFFL bits removed) but would require me to spend some time to learn more first (future exercise). I have two of the tubes on the way. Let's...

    PowerBook 520c/540c backlight interchangeable?

I've got a broken CCFL tube for a 540c. I took the measurements of both the working one (from a Sharp LCD), another working one (from a Toshiba LCD), and my busted one (from a Hosiden LCD), and they all seem to be the same size. 3mm diameter and 218mm length (for just the tube -- not including...

@3lectr1cPPC, got some pictures of the PowerBook Duo 2300c for your site. Note that for the logic board, you list one 33uf 25V. There could be up to two of them. I think I saw some boards with tantalums for these which wouldn't require replacing. But mine had two electrolytic caps. The rest of...

    Powerbook 540c Resurrection

I cut two of them open, they are dry. Tightly packed roll/layers of black stuff inside, but dry.

    Powerbook 540c Resurrection

I've been working on piecing together 4 more 5xx series PowerBooks from various working/not-working machines I picked up a couple weeks ago. Three of them are working but for the fourth, it's a little flaky booting and I noticed the speaker was crackling non-stop after power on. I did smell...

Mac IIci with a working Quantum HD

If it didn't come with one, a cache card noticeable improves performance. That said, I still only run 7.1 on my 68030 based machines because 7.5.5 is just too slow for me on these machines. I run 7.6.1 on my 68040s.

I probably should not have, but I picked up a PowerBook 540c (dead), a PowerBook 520c (working), a PowerBook 520c (dead), a PowerBook Duo 2300c (working)... I did get a PowerPC card (working) with one of them. My room is currently littered with PowerBook parts.. Working Systems PowerBook 540c...

    Powerbook 540c Whitewashed Screen

Depending on which LCD you have, the Sharp one has a bunch of caps that need to be replaced.

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

Not sure why I didn’t hear anything the first time.

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

Made it to 133 minutes. So that not far off from last time. But not the 160-180 minutes I saw before with the SCSI emulator.

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

FYI, this was with a linear straight curve from 100% to 0%. If you look at the curve that @croissantking, it was an S curve. In my previous tests, cases where I see that S curve I do much better in terms of duration. Without the S (ie. a straight linear line down), I get a lot less. I don't...

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

LOL... argh. My "A" cell pack has zero errors. My "AA" cell pack has an error that is uncorrectable (Lind, EMMpathy). Given it charges ok, I'm just going to leave it for now. I don't feel like opening it again to replace the memory chip.

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

Just charged both batteries and ran Battery Amnesia. Came in at 141 minutes to drain both batteries. This is about 60 minutes shorter than what @croissantking got and I think less than what I previously got as well. But there was one difference... my 540c currently has a spinning hard disk in it...

PowerBook 500 Series Battery Rebuild Failure (Oops, all dead EMMs!)

I'm back in business after replacing the EMM board again. I only have 1 working one left, and 2-3 dead ones. :/
