I did not measure.

I replaced the logic board caps on my 8500. All of the caps visually looked ok. But some of them had moisture underneath and fish smell. I think the smaller 10uFs were worse than the larger 47uFs.

Lots of trace fixes. The battery had leaked all through the onboard memory and damaged many of the traces. I replaced all of the memory chips and had to add some bodge wires.

Yup. I had mixed results though.

I did a crystal change with the stock CPU. Been running great at 40 with no serial port issues.

You should be able to test the resistor. The yellow/black wires are to the fan. The thing you are referring to as glossy is just hot glue. There is a bunch in that area to hold the caps rigid as well as the fan wires.

Depending on what the OP wants, you could avoid the complexity and do something basic like have the extension attempt to ping a well known “Internet” service (e.g. Google’s DNS at 8.8.8.8) and just infer general public Internet connectivity if you can reach it.
