    PowerBook 540c - Did a thing (OS 8.6)

Maybe some form of era-appropriate PPC Linux? Tagging @demik. Yeah definitely since it's essentially just an earlier version of Mac OS X, based on OpenStep.

Those are inductors - for removing noise from the 5V rail.

Power book 180, power supply making tick tick noise

Protection diode, very common failure part in these models - they short and prevent power-on. From what others have said on the forums, and my own experience, it’s safe to remove it and try powering on without it there (but plan to replace it soon). The exact value I’m sure has been stated here...

    PowerBook 540c - Did a thing (OS 8.6)

The RAM isn’t the main problem, it’s the architecture. Mac OS X needs Open Firmware, it’s fundamentally incompatible with anything Nubus/Slot Manager based.

    5260/120 issue

It’s so weird that just that this one obscure model of the 5x00 AIOs was quietly specced as fixed frequency, when the rest of the series were multisync. Can we surmise that they were using up old monitor parts stock? To be honest, I run my Multisync 15AV display at 640x480 most of the time...

    5260/120 issue

It’s been highlighted that the 5260 is limited to 640x480 - a limitation of the analog board not the logic board.

    5260/120 issue

Can you shed any light on the resolutions available? Are you limited to 640x480?

    quadra 700 desktop icon corruption @ 24bit in 7.6 / 8.1

I've seen this with one of my 840AV boards, but I think it was a main RAM issue rather than VRAM - swapping modules/trying different slots made it go away. I don't recall if it was in Millions specifically.

adding 4mb SGRAM to PowerPC 5500/6500 ... and possible ATi Rage Pro upgrade

You wouldn’t swap it out though, you’d piggy back two extra chips (with a flying wire for the chip select signal). The same technique is needed for the PowerMac 6500 boards to take them to 4MB. I might try this on a Rev. A iMac board that I’m not very precious about.

Chime of death when filling SE/30 bank 1

At the point it death chimes, the SE/30 exposes the Serial Test Manager over the modem port. If you hook up to another machine by serial cable and run a terminal emulator, the response code should tell you which 8-bit lane of the 32-bit memory bus is faulty, that way you can see which SIMM slot...

48MB in a PowerBook 500 Series – an Illustrated Guide

A few months ago, I worked out how to run 48MB in a PowerBook 500 Series. Inspiration was taken from Toyoki's 64MB mod for PPC upgraded 500-Series notebooks. The concept is similar – tap into unused RAS lines on the memory controller to bump maximum RAM above 36MB. You will need: A 32MB RAM...
