Need help diagnosing my PowerBook 170…

Nice diary, very thorough - definitely helps with diagnosis. At this point I would try using the PB with a different drive entirely, taking the PowerMonster out of the equation. Do the problems go away? Edit: Ah, you say that you disconnected the hard drive ribbon cable entirely and the issues...

Replacing IDE HDD with optical drive on Performa 6320CD

Thanks for taking seriously my slightly facetious comment :p I agree about hardware limitation but just for the sake of covering all the bases, can I ask which version of Mac OS are you running, and therefore which version of the Apple CD-ROM extension is enabled? Were these early Macs using...

    Dead processor?

I see a group of about 7 or 8 pins that are slightly bent, can you very carefully straighten these? Looking again, there are a few others on this side of the chip that are bent, inspect carefully with a magnifying glass.

Powerbook 190 ram upgrade sad chime

Most likely a faulty RAM card (one or more chips dead). You might try blowing some contact cleaner in the connectors just to rule out a bad connection. It’s a 16MB card.

If the Mac is turned upside down, the CD will be the right way up... Et voila.

Replacing IDE HDD with optical drive on Performa 6320CD

I don’t think anyone has tried this, you will have to experiment. As has been mentioned, the implementation of IDE on these Macs is very primitive and possibly non-compliant in a number of ways. Getting the cabling over to the 5.25” bay will be a big challenge, as has already been stated.

    68040 mhz

Yeah, I can't decide between the well-respected, trusted and experienced forum member, or the random website written by an unknown. Seriously, this person got a 68060 working in a Mac, which nobody else has been able to do. Listen to them. You're wasting everyone's time by asking the same...

This part is the correct replacement, it’s significantly smaller in size than the original but can be made to fit: https://mou.sr/4ryPIXJ

PowerBook 500 Connector 'Destroyed Mold' - Just a Myth?

Noted, and thanks :) You're right, the Reloaded name isn't quite correct for this project – don't want to be misleading, of course. OK! We should talk about the ROM side of things, curious to know how such a feature might work. In-system programmable?

PowerBook 500 Connector 'Destroyed Mold' - Just a Myth?

There are three options that I see - 1/ Extend the footprint of the CPU card across the area usually reserved for the modem, and populate it with max RAM. 2/ Create a modern replacement RAM card that uses the standard footprint but with a readily available interconnect 3/ Harvest the original...

PowerBook 500 Connector 'Destroyed Mold' - Just a Myth?

I want to bake in some improvements, like having 16MB (or even the full 48MB addressable) onboard, 550c ROMs in a smaller TSOP48 package, and possibly a programmable clock generator set with DIP switches (if there’s space left over). I'd make a few of these available with full 040 CPUs for sale...

Do you have a link or citation? Despite LEM's reputation for spreading misinformation, I searched the site and couldn't find anything.

PowerBook 500 Connector 'Destroyed Mold' - Just a Myth?

It's common folklore that the connector for the CPU/Memory daughtercard of the PowerBook 500 Series was mysteriously discontinued back in the late 90's, preventing new upgrade cards from being manufactured. I've always just assumed it was true, given the many sources that cite this. Here are...
