    Quadra 840AV Locking Up

The 840AV 40Mhz board is hard on capacitors, and tend to cause their earlier demise. However, you seem to have gone through the usual suspects (PRAM battery, loose or defective RAM, etc.), except one: possible corruption of the disk. Seeing that you've gone through most of the steps I would...

    SCSI/IDE bridge cards for PBs

None of the Duo 2300s had internal SCSI drives. However, there is a SCSI internal drive interface on the 2300 board intended for upgraders from the 2xx duo series who wished to use their internal SCSI drives with the upgrade board.

Cannot install OS 8.0 on a beige G3

They rise from the dead to become repositories for frequently asked questions and their answers (all of them from all points of view). ;-)

Cannot install OS 8.0 on a beige G3

Yep, I can confirm that. There is a special Mac OS 8 disk for the Beige G3. The standard one won't work. However, a standard 8.5/8.6 or later CD will work fine.

    LC pizza box case history

You're correct. I can confirm all that you've posted, having seen and had (and in some cases still have) all those case styles you've mentioned, except the auto-inject LC475. I've seen pictures of those, though.

Putting a Quadra 605 mbo into a LC III

But then you'll also have to craft a location for the fan since half of the original holewill be under the motherboard.

    SCSI/IDE bridge cards for PBs

Isn't that limit when referring to the gray powerbooks (pre-Wallstreet) with IDE drives being used in SCSI disk mode? I think that was a ROM issue. greater than 4GB PB internal IDE drive = Can't be used in SCSI disk mode. SCSI to IDE adaptors are limited only by the controller's capabilities...

    SCSI/IDE bridge cards for PBs

Yes, here's the mothership: Acard There are also SCSI > CF adaptors (great if you want to put an ultra fast, low power consumption CF card in your powerbook). I can't remember the link. I think it was in some Japanese page. CF cards are as large as 64GB, but those more than $1,000. A...

Using large modern hard drives in a Beige G3...

There is only one cable per IDE controller. So, the two cables are for different IDE controllers. Usually the older 40wire type is for the CD Drive, and the 80wire is for the HD which is more sensitive to cable quality. Using both a Master and Slave halves the bandwidth to each drive, so...

Most common upgrades for an SE?

I would say it's more interesting with dual floppy drives. No sense taxing the power supply with a power hungry hard drive. treat it gently like a wise old man. If you'll need a hard drive, try to find one of them Mass Micro Single or Dual 5.25" drive cases. Up the RAM, add Ethernet, but I...

LC 575 and Color Classic Battery Alternatives

Buy a 3AA/AAA plastic battery holder and use good quality Alkalines. Don't solder them! They could leak and it's bye bye Mac.

    Tiger on a 603/604??

Just some comments on some earlier posts: I've recently rediscovered Opera 5 for Mac. Much faster than any other browser on early PPCs. Way faster than netscape, faster than IE, faster than Opera 6. Carbon apps are reeeeaalllyyy sssllllooowww on OS 9, better to get the Classic OS native...

    ImageWriter II ribbon

I think it's an NEC. Lots of them around in Office supply shops, however, don't expect them to know that they have an "Apple Imagewriter" ribbon. Just bring a sample or a picture of the cartrridge (downloaded off the net). I just love cellphone cameras, you can photograph this stuff and take...

Putting a Quadra 605 mbo into a LC III

Yep. I've done that. It's a simple motherboard swap. What you can't do is swap a 475/605 board into an LC case. The locations of the fans and other components are different in an LC.

    350mb dosent go very far!

The newer ACARD SCSI IDE bridges don't have this limitation, the older ones do. It's a limitation of the IDE controller that is on the bridge, not on the computer. SCSI doesn't handle drive sectors directly, and the limitation is with IDE's Logical Block Addressing Scheme. All SCSI sees is a...

Single processor G5 or dual processor G4??

Dual G4s. The G5 never realized its full potential after Apple suspended development of 64-bit PPC computing to shift to Intel. Much of the newfangled motherboard stuff can also be found in the G4 MDD, the one that can't boot in OS9. But you'll need to live without PCI-E, a fancy case...

    350mb dosent go very far!

Yes, you can. There isn't a "disk controller" in a SCSI interface, at least not in the IDE sense. The limitation is with the Operating System. Systems before 7.5.5 support a drive no larger than 4GB, but Appleshare won't support networked drives more than 2GB. System 7.5.5 and up support...

Beige G3 motherboard in 8600 case?

Can you point me to a page for exactly that mod? I'd like to read some documentation about it before actually doing it.

    Casemod: PPC 8500

They are? Hmm.. I never really liked the PCI Power Macs, it's too hard to find RAM and a decent SCSI drive. I had several of those, and ditched them, went back down to Nubus and up to the G machines.

powerbook 540c..... what software will it run?

MS Word 5.0 runs on everything up to Mac Classic on a G5. You may have to reinstall it though, since it may be expecting to see an FPU, seeing that yours is a transfer from an FPU equipped Quadra. Excel 4, and PowerPoint 3 shuld be good matches. I'm sorry but I can't find anything good to say...
