Monowall works on pretty old machines. The P4 is pretty useful for anything really.

Could it be an Apple ROM issue? Don't the hard drives need to be formatted with the Apple disk tools or a patched version to allow the drives to function with the computer?

You can use them as servers, media centers, Internet radios, with a spare LCD or CRT monitor you can do whatever the hell you want.
