I did try the patch anyways, but same behaviour.  Worse case ill I’ll take a stock 450 and change it to be a 500.. that should be plenty for playing 2000 era games. But it’s a shame this damn 1ghz won’t play nice with OS9. 

I have tried multiple combos of RAM.. I have 7 or 8 DIMMs, and no matter the combo, I get the same odd behavior on OS9. Oh, and Re: the SSD, I did try another IDE disk I had lying around, same issue. Makes me still want to blame the CPU.. but again, why does 10.4 work?

Leopard assist only changes the clockspeed reported by open firmware. When it's actually got a 1ghz installed, I don't need to use that for the disc to boot. Good thought though.

Hi all, I abandoned my Cube aspirations and picked up a pristine Sawtooth locally. Factory specs are a G4 400, 256 RAM, 10GB HDD. I ripped most of that out. Tossed in a Sonnet Encore 1ghz, bumped RAM to 1gb, and chucked in an SSD. Also is rocking a Radon 9000 and two Voodoo II's so I can play...

So, if a VRM blows up.. and took the Video card and SSD with it.. chances are it took the CPU too? Asking for a friend.

So, finally tore down my Cube in preparation for the new CPU. Between the CPU module and the Cubes heat-sink, there's two strips of a foil type material. Can I just toss this, clean up the area with some alcohol, and then use some high quality thermal paste instead?

All MDDs can run native OS9. The ones with Firewire 800 ports need that custom version of OS 9.2 floating around. Here's the thing with MDDs.. they're fucking loud. Like really really loud. For OS9 you're better off with a Quicksilver. For OS 10+ you're better off with a (non watercooled) G5. ...

Quick followup after digging. The power regulators on the Cube VRM (stock) only go up to 10amps.. so changing the Mosfets won't do anything. The regulators need to be changed too.. and I can't find a direct replacement. So.. might be back to the Stratos one. Grr.

Hello again,  Sorry for (yet) another Cube question. So, the VRM. Important to keep cool, and/or change it if you're going to be adding a bunch of extra components.. e.g. CPU, newer GPU, etc.. For a hobby, I'm having a hard time justifying the $200 for the Stratos one.. not saying it's a bad...

Fan is already installed, so no problem there. I guess I'll look up that Stratos VRM guy and see if we can do a deal. It'll allow me to install the Radeon 9000 I have kicking around too. Y'all are right though, better safe than sorry right? Especially with how hard parts are to find for these.

Looks like it's an Encore ST G4. 1Ghz.  Manual says you need to install a fan if using a Cube. No worries there. But it also says if you have the 800mhz and 1200mhz, nothing else is needed. But if you're using the 1Ghz, it's saying you need a newer VRM? Can anyone comment on this? You'd think...

I might have a line on a 1ghz Sonnet.. I'm thinking about trying it on the stock VRM, since the aftermarket one is like $200.

Yeah, thats the one. Apparently his placement of capacitors allows larger cards like the 9000 to fit as well without having to relocate the VRM.

Just the card is exactly what I'm looking for provided it's not a dual CPU.. send me a picture if you want? Happy to make an offer.

I found a japanese site selling the higher test VRMs.. so not worried there.
