Troubleshooting a Flaky Houdini II DOS/PC Compatibility Card & Cooling Upgrades

Amazing finds on the solder points wearing out. Likewise, good find on the heatsink. I’ll probably order that same one. Not a fan of the factory heatsink. Where did you get the 1MB L2 cache? I’ve been looking for a while and have had no luck.

    Coolest 68k Powerbooks to own?

My understanding is that A/UX is very specific about the hardware it will run on. To my knowledge, no PowerBook was ever supported. That said, you may have some luck getting older Debian versions working. https://wiki.debian.org/M68k/Installing

    PB145B’s finds

Agreed. The Wallstreet is an amazing OS 9 machine. I do have a dual boot partition for 10.4.11 through xpostfacto for bridge machine purposes, but primarily run it as an OS 9 machine.

    LC 475 Project - Upgrades - Mods

The 68kmla wiki used to have an excellent page on the floppy drive disassembly and maintenance. Not sure if it’s still there.

    PowerBook 165c Capacitors

Following up here, anyone have a listing? Not critical but would be helpful to have parts ordered before opening computer. I had tried to check the wiki to see if it was listed there, but that won’t load for me. @Cory5412 not sure if that a me issue or something wrong with the site.

Screen Craps Out But Only After I've Loaded Combined Update 10.2.8; Before That Everything Was Terrific.

Early OS X versions were pickier with RAM than OS 9. Not sure if that level of pickiness changed across the early versions. Assuming you have two 128mb sticks of RAM installed, I’d try with one, then the other to see if any change.

    180c question

From what I’ve read it sounds like it could be the cable. Is it possible a part of it is coming loose? If you apply pressure to where it meets the display does anything change? Or if you move the display any change?

Mac IIcx booting intermittently, PRAM problem?

Agreed, sounds very similar to how my 6100 (which requires a PRAM battery to boot normally) behaves right as the battery is at the end of life.

Macintosh Classic, no power at all

@amedeo_68k there is a similar thread talking about unstable voltages here https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/se-30-sony-cr-44-psu-unstable-voltage-output.33182/ They are discussing SE/SE30 Sony PSU, so definitely different than your Classic but perhaps there are similar parts on your...

Try to bring a Mac 128K back to life...Neeed help

I personally go through phases where I’ll be active on here for a while then step away for a bit, depending on life events, etc.

Macintosh Classic, no power at all

I agree on checking voltages. Both without hard drive and again with hard drive connected. Sounds like hard drive is pulling just enough current to pull down the voltage.

    PowerBook 165c Capacitors

Does anyone have a complete listing of all electrolytic capacitors in a 165c? Looking to get them replaced in mine.

    Chikorita157's Finds

In my experience, bus speed seems to have a huge impact on overall responsiveness in Mac OS X. If the end goal is an OS X machine (or later Classic era games), I’d take the Beige G3. Also worth noting that the Beige G3 bus speed can be overclocked if I remember correctly. I believe I had mine...

    Coolest 68k Powerbooks to own?

This is very true right here. I had one each of the PowerBook 500 series, excluding the 550c, never got that one. Got my first one very early 2000s, and then sold all of them off a few years ago. I will say, the 540 and 540c both had absolutely amazing displays, especially considering their...
