@bigmessowires I was thinking if you use a microcontroller in your adapter, would there be a way to detect what kind of signals the Mac is sending, and have the microcontroller configure itself, so the adapter wouldn’t need any configuration switches, it would be completely automatic!

IIRC it’s one trace to cut, and one bridge to solder. The soldering is the easy part! It does not require any precision. Cutting on the other hand: you don’t want to slip! But it’s not in any way delicate work. And don’t pay 80 dollars just for one programmed ROM chip. It must be more like $20...

One thing that could explain leakage in computers that had seen a lot of use is stress induced by cycles of heating and cooling. When the computer is running, heat will expand the capacitors and when the computer is turned off cooling will shrink them again. Repeat every day for several years...

Turns out I have the exact same interface board: just remove the jumper, so 2-3 will be open and in the Hi configuration that would be slave!

csel means cable select, the master/slave configuration is determined by the cable, but it’s not supported in the Cube. Lo (low) is master and Hi (high) is slave, or is it the other way around?!

As by default the hard drive is set to master, the optical drive should be set to slave (or ID 1). There should be a jumper on the little adapter board between the ribbon cable and the optical drive.

Are you sure it’s not a master/slave problem? I have replaced the optical drive in a few cubes and don’t recall ever needing a driver. Does the drive appear in System Profiler?

Laser diodes tend to fail over time. They have a finite running time. That’s a problem that plague audio CD players too. There’s nothing that can be done, except replacing the laser pickup assembly. Good luck finding the part… (I too have a stack of non working tray-loading scsi cdrom drives)

What’s stranger is that Apple allowed them to resell Cube PSUs in the first place! I bought a DVIator back in the day, it definitely came with a Cube PSU. Having a spare proved to be very useful. I watch Cube listings on eBay and spare Cube PSUs seems quite common.
