How many floppy drives can a SWIM chip control? (just curious)

According to my understanding, the IWM has two enable pins (/ENBL1 and /ENBL2), which allow it to natively control two different floppies, so the simple answer is two. But beyond that, it’s possible for software and hardware on either side of it to cooperate in a way that enables additional...

    TashTalk: Single-Chip LocalTalk Interface

Have you tried getting two of your adapters talking so that you get a look at the transmitting and receiving ends at the same time? I’d like to give it a go, or at least do some more work on multitalk to the point where it’s useful to you. I don’t remember exactly how well I was doing at...

Looking for GBMac version 1.3.1 - offering a 500$ reward (via paypal) to anyone who can archive/upload it

The kanji for the developer’s name are probably “内藤 秀樹”, but I couldn’t find any more contemporary references with that either.

    Modern G4 Cube PSU replacement?

Unfortunately, looks like a bust. I decided I’d pick one up to check, but the pin assignment is orthogonal to the Cube PSU’s, and the pins aren’t given separate wires in the cable. It’s a shame, because the fit is pretty good.

    Modern G4 Cube PSU replacement?

I think you’re looking for the KPPX-4P. It’s sometimes called “Power-DIN” (not “DIN” or “Mini-DIN”) but I don’t think that’s an official name for it, and the term doesn’t appear on the KPPX datasheet. In an ideal world, you might be able to pick up this PLUG-P1J-R7B adapter and use a standard...

Help on Mac to VGA adapter

I don’t have any documentation for that particular adapter, but my guess would be that switches 1-4 wire pins together directly (ground and sense 0, 1, and 2), and 5-6 wire diodes between sense 1 and 2 for multisync. That’s consistent with 24 giving 832×624. If I’m correct, then the following...

    A simple C (Think C) question

I don’t know if this is the reason, but I believe that floating-point arithmetic is sometimes done at higher precision and then rounded. If you imagine a “two decimal digit” floating-point number, it would be like this: decimal2 x = 2.9; decimal2 y = 0.5; integer i1 = x * y; // round 1.45 to 1...

Trying to recreate the earliest Mac released in Japan (Mac Plus?)

One of these popped up on Yahoo Auctions again: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r465570559 This one seems to be missing the badge in the front, but has some interior photos and a clearer picture of the expanded ROM, which I’ll reproduce here. Apparently the expanded ROM clips over...

Looking for dinosaur games - System 7

I remember spending a while with Dinosaur Safari. I would’ve been somewhat older. I think some of the more aggressive dinosaurs can give you a scare. MG claims it’s 68k, though the system requirements must be on the high side. I also can’t help but think of this:

2-component LC power supply (amateur hour bodge)

I’m not familiar with the LC series, but I know that early analog boards (128k/512k/Plus) have -12V (and not -5V) and I thought that was likewise for RS-422/LocalTalk. Do the specific voltages matter, or do they just have to be far enough apart? Wikipedia suggests to me that ±5V is correct for...

    Macintosh Plus Extended Keyboard CAPACITORS

Like I said, I don’t have a good way to measure it. I pulled out a tape measure. 11mm sounds like a good guess for the length (it’s hard to get a tape measure in there). I think the diameter is smaller, about 5mm. Just to be clear, the markings say 6.3V, not 63V.

    Macintosh Plus Extended Keyboard CAPACITORS

Oh, the chip’s different: Yours has a 74LS14N inverter. The µPC339C appears to be a comparator.

    Macintosh Plus Extended Keyboard CAPACITORS

It has a M812M0100… (1988) serial number, so it was probably a Plus mouse, but I don’t know if I can say that with confidence. Your mouse matches a G447M0100… that I have. I saw another, seemingly older mouse (no chip) on the forums as well. By the way, here’s the underside. There are a lot...

    Macintosh Plus Extended Keyboard CAPACITORS

They appear to be 47µF 6.3V capacitors: I don’t have a good tool for measuring size, but from the profile, the height appears to be slightly more than the switch box and slightly less than the switch button. I think the case leaves them some good clearance too.

Dumb AppleTalk Question: Networking Classic and SE

System 6 doesn’t have built-in file-sharing, though the Classic Mac Networking guide and vintageapple.org site list some System-6 compatible server software: AppleShare v2 EasyShare demo (10 minute time limit) Oscar, SingleShare, Public Folder… I don’t have experience with any of...
