I've never heard of anyone doing a re-cone on tiny speakers, but stranger things have happened. FWIW, all the dead speakers I've encountered had open voice coil windings.
Take a very close look at the entire power harness, starting from the solder joints on the analog board and ending at their compatriots on the motherboard. You may have a cold/cracked joint or oxidized contact somewhere along the line.
FWIW, I replaced a dead SE speaker with an 8-ohm unit and it's been working fine. One can do extensive circuit analysis or one can simply take a leap. I suspect the duty cycle is too short to cause problems. YMMV.
I'm easily able to get reliable 44 MHz. operation from my Q650, but that seems to be the hard limit. Mac OS 7 is happy at faster speeds but A/UX locks solid at "loading device drivers". I have a feeling that A/UX puts far more stress on the machine.
As others mentioned, the first step is removing and replacing all the SMD caps. Everyone has their own approach to cleaning up the corrosion. I usually dab the area with white vinegar (both sides of the board if the crud appears on the bottom) and let it bubble away to neutralize any remaining...
I'd be willing to bet that Artisan Technology has the firmware updates. Looks like they bought out the remaining inventory when Ancot got folded up. I just bought a DS-216 on eBay and would love to get my hands on any firmware upgrades.
I'll drop Artisan a note, but even if they have the...
I have a workaround of sorts! It turns out that MacOS 8.1 with Modem Manager active will register on the Appletalk network and cheerfully remount remote volumes at startup. I did try using the modem manager on System 7.6.1. It loaded without complaint but does not solve the problem in that...
I should have followed up sooner - apologies. It turned out to be a physically broken height control. I had accidentally swiped with a pair of pliers while pulling glue away from one of the caps. At the time it looked fine so I didn't give it any further thought. Because of the circuit...
I tried the Applescript approach and it doesn't even work from a running system, much less during boot. I'd have to be able to script the Chooser, but it's apparently not scriptable. I pushed the Applescript record button and after Chooser starts it stops detecting input.
I think I created my own problems. Yesterday I was making a copy of the System file for backup, then rebooting from the rom simm to edit it. For whatever reason, that approach yields a grayed out paste option. Today I made a copy, moved it to another folder and ResEdit was able to rearrange...
@nathall I'm not actually able to rearrange driver order in the "By Order in File" view. I can cut them, but then 'Paste' is grayed out and there's no obvious way to reinsert it. Also not finding any mention of this in the ResEdit manuals. Are there some secret undocumented commands? I'm...
After making this change it was not possible to select 'Alternate Ethernet' (Dayna SCSI) as the Appletalk interface. It popped up an error dialog telling me it wasn't available.
Alas, both .ENET and .ENET0 were already at the top.
I appreciate the suggestions, however, and am glad to try any...
