it is probably the driver IC to the printhead. there is a driver for each pin. the drive transistor for the coil probably failed. I dont recall if all of the pin drivers are in a single IC or not, and if so, change the IC.

Try cleaning the zebra stripes on the panel, otherwise its likely just bad. Although i think those panles use physical drive ICs, so if you can narrow down which IC it is you can replace it and see if it comes back.

I ran into a backlit portable that had this same regulation problem. Never did figure that one out when all the traces were good.

Did you use a good battery with the system? these machines need a nice strong battery or they wont work right.

Does it freeze before the desktop or at the desktop? usually thats caused by failure to communicate with the SCC.

Ive seen 2 or 3 polymers actually go bad. but you can visibly tell usually, and its caused by external factors.

If it was that bad, then the broken connection can be anywhere. I bet while powered up, if you push/manipulate this area, the fault will come and go.
