Backporting HFS+ to Mac OS 8.0 and earlier

I see. That makes sense. However, it won't harm them now to develop the HFS+ patch into a backwards-compatible enabler, so hopefully it can be done, especially since copy-pasting things in ResEdit is kind of tedious and error-prone, especially for beginners. c

Backporting HFS+ to Mac OS 8.0 and earlier

Well, I did notice that the HFS+ patch doesn't work on CHRP-enabled Mac OS 7.6 when the patches are applied to the System file; for some reason, the patches have to instead be applied to the CHRP enabler to be functional, so this does tend to imply that it can indeed be implemented as an...

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

I see. The least problematic solution, therefore, would seem to be to find the routines in the newer ROM that allow the brightness controls to work (fortunately, it was fixed relatively early on; the initial retail release of 9.1, which contains ROM 6.1, has a working brightness control) and...

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

Tried 3.9. That worked, but brightness is still broken. All the machine-specific versions are, unsurprisingly, not working. Can that "This won't work on your model" stuff be patched out? I would try patching these ROMs myself, if I knew how (I don't). c

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

OK, I downloaded Mac OS ROM 5.5.1. Is it ready to go as is, or do I have to do anything to it? I guess I'll try a few things and find out.... EDIT. I just expanded it. However, 5.5.1 didn't work; I got a "this startup disk is not supported by your model" error just after the Happy Mac. c

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

Ahh, OK! I didn't realize there were stock ROMs there. I thought there were only patched versions. I'll check it out! c

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

No, I haven't! I'll have to do that! Do you know where I could find that specific version? Is there a repository of Mac OS ROMs somewhere? c

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

UPDATE #2: Perhaps I was a bit premature. The flash drive System folder boots up perfectly with ROM 10.2.1, but when I put it in the System folder on the internal hard drive, it locks up hard just before the Finder is supposed to load. No more errors at least, but it's not exactly an...

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

Update: The resources for display brightness control are in Mac OS ROM! On a hunch, I thought I'd try copying the Mac OS ROM off the OS 9.1 CD I have handy here (which can control brightness) and attempting to boot 9.0.4 with it. Well, it didn't work, because it crashed with innumerable...

Fixing Broken Screen Brightness for Pismo Running Mac OS 9.0.x

I only just today discovered this minor, but important problem, and since nowadays, there's really no practical benefit to running the latest version of OS 9 (except perhaps for compatibility with the relatively few applications that require 9.1 and up), this is something that should probably be...

Trying to Install maciNTosh (Windows NT) on My Pismo

I gave up for now, because I couldn't get anything to work. So for now, I'm setting it up as stock with the original 9.0.4 (I learned that apparently, when Apple updated the firmware, they broke compatibility with a couple features when running 9.0.4 or below: brightness control, and clamshell...

Trying to Install maciNTosh (Windows NT) on My Pismo

I thought the NT bootloader was supposed to create that automatically? In, for instance, Mac OS 9, can I simply update the disk drivers via Drive Setup like normal without trashing all the NT stuff? Or is there a special procedure I need to follow? I patched my CHRP 7.6 installation for HFS+...

Trying to Install maciNTosh (Windows NT) on My Pismo

I just got whatever was on WinWorldPC, because I thought that all the early releases had all supported architectures on one disk. Perhaps I was mistaken? I'll look around for other copies that might be more proper for this purpose (I have a commercially-made NT 4 Workstation CD that came with...

Trying to Install maciNTosh (Windows NT) on My Pismo

I got it partitioned and the bootloader up and running. I choose "Run a program" and type "cd:\ppc\setupldr" and setup starts, but all "other" options seem to result in an error that references a line 913 in a .c file (I don't recall the path). Why is this? Is the burned copy of NT 4...

    Living the dreamm~ PowerMac G5

Interesting! I had forgotten, but I do vaguely remember reading that thread when it was current. That said, it's now firmly established that, as far as implementation goes, the G4 is more or less a G3 with a 3x faster bus, AltiVec and various other enhancements and improvements. However, is...

Backporting HFS+ to Mac OS 8.0 and earlier

No, I put them in the System file! It didn't seem to break anything, fortunately, but the patch isn't working either, so I'll put them into the enabler as well and see how that goes. EDIT: That worked! c
