Getting back to this almost a year later: I managed to follow your instructions, image to the SD card, and set up the laser printer in CUPS. Now...how do I get the old Macs to see it with the LaserWriter 8 driver in the Chooser?
Fair enough, and I grant that I don’t really make images with modern Macs (they lack a drive, anyway), and mostly use 10.4-10.6 for imaging, so it makes sense why my images work fine for me. Thank you for the in-depth answer.
As a complete refutation (not that I’m right or wrong), but every single CD I’ve ever made that starts a Mac was always burned at whatever the maximum possible speed of the drive I had was. Never had a problem as long as it is a good .cdr of the entire disc, not just the data volume.
