Getting back to this almost a year later: I managed to follow your instructions, image to the SD card, and set up the laser printer in CUPS. Now...how do I get the old Macs to see it with the LaserWriter 8 driver in the Chooser?

Were you able to get the disk flux imaged by an AppleSauce or the like?

I’ve got a complete, originally owned, very first iMac G4, if that helps.

Fair enough, and I grant that I don’t really make images with modern Macs (they lack a drive, anyway), and mostly use 10.4-10.6 for imaging, so it makes sense why my images work fine for me. Thank you for the in-depth answer.

My point is, as long as you do it properly, Disk Utility does work just fine. Never sure why the big-to-do with DD.

Still not sure why just using Disk Utility isn’t the easiest option.

All work. I have the last gen forming the backbone of my network, and they work fine. All earlier ones will, too.

As a complete refutation (not that I’m right or wrong), but every single CD I’ve ever made that starts a Mac was always burned at whatever the maximum possible speed of the drive I had was. Never had a problem as long as it is a good .cdr of the entire disc, not just the data volume.
