Source of VRAM chips for G3

If you just need chip, you can snag them from cheap PC ATI Rage Pro video cards. The Apple 4MB cards are getting harder to find same with PC card SODIMMs. Part KM416S1120DT-G8 Category Memory => DRAM => SDR SDRAM => 16 Mb Title Graphics Memory Description Description = KM416S1120DT...

    Recapped 166 Apple compatibility card.

I have one working card and one I got for free because the Inductors by the top external port look charred which I never did anything with (plan on fixing it some day). I do wonder what somebody plugged into that top port. The Nubus PC cards get all the love, but the PCI ones are interesting as...

    A trash can.... Mac :)

Mac Pro 5,1 would be socket 1366 and sold with either a X5675 or W3680 topping out at either 3.466 or 3.6Ghz (boost) 6C12T. There is a W3690 that turbos to 3.77Ghz that will currently run you $52 a piece from China, or the X5690 equivalent which I see for low $40's each from China BIN. The...

    A trash can.... Mac :)

I expect some kind of new thing to show up eventually that will need some kind of AI processor or use massive amounts of memory to make current low spec systems obsolete. It's the only way to push new purchases other than making the OS more secure and locking out all the old hardware like...

Modern Power Supply for Macintosh II/x/fx

May I ask why you didn't try to fix the original supply (since you seem to be very technically inclined)? I kept some old dead custom PS supplies from OEM systems which I replaced because while just replacing them is cheaper now or at that time, down the road it might be worth fixing the old ones.

    A trash can.... Mac :)

I don't think pouring money into any 2013 machine make sense other than from a collecting standpoint. There are plenty of much newer machines being ewasted that are faster.

Modern Power Supply for Macintosh II/x/fx

Nothing modern fits without some "work".

    Radius System 100

After the 4 minute mark you can see that metal front frame that comes off and the plastic front faceplate that was attached to it. Unless you are removing an optical or floppy drive there isn't a reason to remove the front panel, the back frame comes off with a million screws and the...

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

The UK was big in Sinclair and then Amiga because they were much cheaper, and Sinclair was home grown (so no import duties). I purchased a new 286/12 Packard Bell probably in 1990 before I was done with college. Before that I had to deal with a C64 + 1541 floppy and a dot matrix printer...

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

Clones took ages to make an impact in the home market, but they made an impact in the office environment because of price. Before the PC every time you purchased a computer for the office you needed to buy all new software and train the office staff in its use and that was big money back then...

What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

I bounce around between platforms and most of my fun is fixing and setting up machines.

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

The A4000 was released when the company was short on money and dying. Look at the Mac IIci (Sept 1989 $6269) vs Amiga 3000 (June 1990 $3379)

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

Amiga was cheaper than a Mac, but the ST was cheaper than the Amiga. I have a 1040ST and both Atari monitors (color and mono) and the mono would have worked great as a cheap Mac.

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

If Apple had died at the end of the 68K era the Apple community would have been the same as the Amiga one.

    Amiga: the fastest 68k Mac

If you purchased a Mac II you probably did so because of some kind of expensive Nubus card you needed (DSP, Sound, Video capture). Kind of hard not to be able to emulate a machine with the same CPU if you can source the ROMs.

What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

The early days of eBay (very late 90's when PayPal came about) and freecycle (2003) were a gold mine. Also, the early 00's computer forums and even newsgroups were a great place to buy and trade. When people looked at collectors like they had a screw lose and you could just start finding gear up...

What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

I still remember getting a IIsi from the old VFC marketplace (vintagecomputermarketplace.com) just because I wanted the cheap 4x16MB 30 pin SIMMs (was used as a server with a hole drilled in the case for a red HD LED). The unit had the Nubus adapter in it, "new floppy drive" (I assume he just...

What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

I look for deals on old macs but only once in a while. The last Mac I purchased was an Intel iMac this year, a 660av was the last 68K I snagged in 2017, and a PPC G4 20" iMac was the last PPC I snagged in 2017. Like most 68K gear the 660av needed a HD, PS was replaced, and the board was...

I would assume there is a very finite amount of those custom GPUs to go around.
