Insights from full recap and restore of Trayloader G3 iMac

Any info on original caps? Were they still in spec? I don't think they leak I know they are pushing 25 year mark, but I have some apple stuff pushing 40 year mark and still going strong with original caps (except RIFAs).

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Btw are there any reports of leaking caps in those LCDs?

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

I opted actually actually for Hybrid Polymers, not the standard Polymers. They are somewhere in between of a Polymer and normal Aluminum Electrolytics. A bit of a new technology. I don't think they will leak anytime soon also :) There's a good read of comparing these three technologies...

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Hey, yeah, go ahead. You can use the photos and the cap list :) I am also planning of opening a dedicated new thread and presenting the restoration there. Btw, I ordered Aluminum Hybrid Polymer Capacitors, as they are more like standard electrolytics, but have excellent electrical properties...

    Questions about 5xx batteries

NiCD and NiMH batteries can last decades (actually surpassing Lithium Ion), but only if their seals aren't broken, so the air can't get into and oxidise them. But as we can see, most of those batteries leak after all that time as the seals get breached, and the air enters, and the electrolyte...

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Thanks! Well I got the 270c yesterday and is uses bit different array of caps: Here is the list: Logic board: 4x 35V 100uF 10x10mm footprint 1x 35V 47uF 8x8mm footprint 1x 25V 100uF 8x8mm footprint All those must be 10-11 mm tall or less 1x 25V 33uF 6x6mm footprint, 6mm tall Inverter: 1x...

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Hey, anyone has a list of all PB Duo 270c capacitors? Does the LCD on it also needs a recap? Thanks, M.

    Capacitor Recommendations for SE/30

My hands on experience with Apple laptops: For the polymer caps, on the MacBooks that run 12.6V PPBUS_G3H (main power rail), they used all 16V caps. And they hold very well, no instances of being shorted or anyhow degraded over years. And those machines also run very hot, something that isn't a...

    Capacitor Recommendations for SE/30

There is an issue. Tantalum caps have much greater voltage derating. In simple words, tantalum capacitor that "sees" 12V needs to be more than 16V rated, that one should be 25V. Other types of cap technology don't have this problem. Apple used same rated capacitors (16V 47uF) on multiple voltage...

Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

I tried DOT3 brake fluid on one 512K before (it was really bad shape, and painted with some quite thick paint), and it didn't go that well. The plastic became weakened around the top vents which then cracked. I managed to glue it back together, but it is really bad. Also the plastic got streaks...

Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

Hey I just got this 512K in somewhat sorry shape. Has some screen burn in, the case is super yellowed. And of course, the machine doesn't work - fuse is missing, this was told to me by a previous owner who examined it before. But it has SCSI and RAM upgrades (some snap on thing) But the main...

    LCIII rebooting?

From my memory, LCIII has one cap marked the wrong way on the logic board, so the polarity is incorrect. Electrolytic caps will survive that reverse polarity (and might even self reform to reverse polarity after time), but tantalum caps really hate it and may be shorting it. Or it could be just...

iBook Clamshell - Only Detecting 64MB of 512MB RAM Stick?

I would try to get a 256MB or 128MB stick in there just to see if it works. Perhaps 512MB uses too high density chips and it somehow messes up the memory detection. Or the stick itself is bad (not likely, but possible). Or it has somehow wrong information on the SPD EPROM so the iBook "thinks"...

    PowerBook 165c preventative maintenance

'junk from China' means junk from China. Something that is really poorly made and not up to any standards / regulations. Of course you can have something that is U.S. made considered as junk, and something made in China that is considered top notch. I had good experience with Mean Well PSUs and...

    PowerBook 165c preventative maintenance

Just saying. If the Chinese ones would have been equally good, then I would say to just go for it. But believe me what crap are they putting into. No fuses, transformers without protective tape between the layers, no safety rated caps, bad solder joints, etc. Of course, if yours cannot be...

    PowerBook 165c preventative maintenance

Anyways, thanks for all the answers. Yes I know how to open the charger without damaging it (vise method), but sometimes the case might break at the top lip. I did 4 or 5 chargers like that, and 2 of them there was bit more damage than anticipated, but still nothing serious. For the display, I...

    PowerBook 165c preventative maintenance

Why gut an old Sony or Delta made unit that was made up to a very high standard and put inside junk from China? I am 100% positive that Chinese one would have worse ripple and electrical noise, and it could even burn a house down. For that price, it is definitely going to be a dodgy or even...

    PowerBook 165c preventative maintenance

Hey, I am wondering what should I do in terms of preventative maintenance on a PowerBook 165c? I heard that screen should be recapped. I had it done on few before - like 160 and 140, but that ones were clearly defective (contrast all over the place, etc.). And caps were leaking all over the PCB...

Heavily Upgraded 512K Logic Board - Thoughts?

I replaced the missing 74F253N and removed all the upgrades. I am getting now error 20100, so looks like G5 is the culprit now
