    PM 5500 External SCSI Woes

Hi all, I'm experiencing a weird issue. When I plug in a my BlueSCSI DB25 drive to the external SCSI connector, the machine hangs on boot. Happy chime, but no icon, just a mouse pointer. I have 2 logic boards actually, one from the PM5500, which is completely recapped and one from a 6500...

    jmacz journey

Very cool. I’ve done this type of conversion with a few PSUs, including the soft power circuit and a fan replacement. It’s a lot of work, especially if you want the PSU and connectors to look stock on the outside. Yours looks very clean, well done!

DayStar PowerCache 50MHz IIci Performance Results

Pretty sure the P33 is universal. Look on the other side. It should say universal in the corner. I believe these are just different revisions of the same board.

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

LOL, actually I would have preferred if you were right and told me how to make the PCI Radeons amazingly fast. I did read some reports that they are faster in OS X, but I never tried it myself. I would surmise that ATI probably put most of their effort into 3d drivers since that was the...

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

Hmm my experience is different. I benchmarked these quite extensively some years ago on a G3 desktop (that’s in pieces right now). My results were that even the Twin Turbo was several times faster than the 7000 in QuickDraw acceleration. I did confirm that the 7000 had the right drivers and...

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

TBH, in classic OS those cards are just as good if not better, imho. In my testing many of the older PCI cards had significantly better 2d acceleration than the PCI Radeons. So unless you’re playing 3d games, you’re better off with a IXMicro TT, Rage 128, etc. Of course it depends on the...

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

So I finally got around to working on this. The problem went away after installing the MaxPowr extension and control panel. I didn’t have to have to change anything, I think the NewerTech default settings made the difference. Thanks again for the tip!

Awesome, thanks! Now I have another fun project.

    My Macintosh II Restoration

Not entirely. I attached the “most circulated” diagram for PM8500. The thread itself no longer exists. The 47k pull-down resistor in the diagram) introduces too high of a voltage drop, resulting in low input signal and therefore the PSU is always on. Lower values like 10k resulted in...

    My Macintosh II Restoration

Really nice job! I especially like your ATX psu conversion. I’m tempted to do one myself (even though there’s nothing wrong with my Mac II psu). Did you follow some diagram for the soft power circuit? These things are hard to find and the last conversion I did (PM8500), the resistor values...

    Network Boot Floppy

Yeah that 233mhz Umax card is probably as good a deal as you’re gonna get in terms of price/performance. The third party g3/g4 cards are usually 5-10 times more expensive.

Color Classic Screen / Dim Spot

I would check the degaussing coil and make sure it’s properly connected to the analog board, and that the 4 corner screws are securing it snug to the edges.

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

Thanks a lot, @Phipli. I will try your suggestions and report back. I did already try the #3 dip switch to ON, per your suggestion, and it didn't help. I also tried last night (before your replies) checking the VRAM by using 2 sticks at a time (I have 4 total) - that should rule out having a...

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

It’s a PowerMac 8500, sorry. There are four dip switches on the board, so you might be onto something. I couldn’t find a manual to find out what they do. Or maybe the bus speed is controlled via software?

    PM 8500 + G3 = video artifacts

Hey folks, I recently grabbed a MAXPower G3 500Mhz card for my MP 8500 to replace my 400Mhz Sonnet (cuz why not? :)). The issue I'm facing is that when I drag windows around etc, they leave little outlines and dots around. The menu bars also have some color distortion that gets worse any time...

Nice, I don’t think 2.2 is available anywhere else - at least not that I could find.

    Quesse Mac SE '020 accelerator

My Novy card (I believe the Gemini is the same card rebranded) doesn’t have any POST animation or graphic. P.S. That’s totally unexpected that Gemstart 3.0 works under System 6 (and a very early accelerator) while 2.1 doesn’t.

    Quesse Mac SE '020 accelerator

That control panel looks like a rebranded Gemstart, so it’s surprising it doesn’t work. Can you try with different RAM? I’ve had random bus errors and other weird issues with SE accelerators that had “seemingly good” RAM but the accelerator didn’t like.
