help with PowerBook 100 LCD signals?

I didn't read the whole previous thread, but did you actually check if the machine itself is ok? Simplest way would be to use a boot floppy and listen for the standard floppy activity.

    PB190 & System 7.1?

You can trash Sound Manager on System 7.1.x. But not on 7.5+ because it doesn't exist (it's integrated into the System file).

    Restricting Color Modes

It has a 5300ce display transplanted into it. And it doesn’t have enough VRAM to run 800x600 resolution at 16 bits.

    PB190 & System 7.1?

I hate to disagree here, but 7.1 is much more compatible with older games than 7.5+. The main issue is sound handling, which appears to be completely different. This results in many older games having weird sound issues or no sound at all. Additionally, some games will crash completely in...

    Restricting Color Modes

Hey all. Is there a way I can limit what color modes are selectable in the Monitors control panel and the Control Strip under system 7.x? Specifically, I would like to remove the option of “thousands of colors”. Basically, I would like to prevent accidental selection of this mode since it...

    AE TW2340 (TW1340) Accelerators - Maximum RAM

So to clarify, Compact Virtual control panel just allows you to set the amount of memory to use. To actually see the allocated RAM, you just use the About My Macintosh dialog as usual. You don’t have to worry about RAM disks or anything like that (since you were asking). P.S. Oh and also...

    5300ce 68uf cap

It's 68uF @ 10v. First two digits are the capacitance, third digit is multiplier, and A is code for 10v.

    5300ce 68uf cap

Thanks. I went ahead and it didn't cause any issues. It's a super nice display. Now I need to decide whether I want a 190ce and a 5300cs with a ce board, or 190cs and 5300ce. Decisions, decisions...

    5300ce 68uf cap

Hey, just checking, any reason why the 5300ce LCD cap is so huge? Wondering if it’s safe to replace with a tiny tantalum. Here a pic for reference (tant on the left, original on the right).

    AE TW2340 (TW1340) Accelerators - Maximum RAM

The way I see it, if you swap the CPU for a full 030, the worse than can happen is that you’re still stuck at 4MB. But if it works, you would likely not only quadruple your RAM, but you would also see significant RAM speed increase. From my experience with similar accelerators, their RAM...

    AE TW2340 (TW1340) Accelerators - Maximum RAM

Did you actually try Compact Virtual to see if it works? I have several of these early accelerators with onboard RAM and they all rely on Compact Virtual to unlock the full 16MB. Maybe AE used some of their magic to make it work with Compact Virtual despite it being a EC CPU?

Novel method for restoring original coloration of Compact Mac cases

Not trying to debate the merits of different techniques, I was just describing what I do. But Lux measurement only measures visible light, thus UV is completely excluded from the measurement. I.e. you can’t have “9k Lux of pure UV”. Furthermore, Lux measurement puts the highest emphasis on...

Novel method for restoring original coloration of Compact Mac cases

I call the technique "light-blasting" (Copyright! ;)) Like sand-blasting but with high energy photons My theory on why this works so well is that high-powered lighting can literally blast away the surface impurities, leaving you with pristine original plastic. But you need very high energy...

Novel method for restoring original coloration of Compact Mac cases

Interesting find. I don’t know how practical this would be, but it might work for some. I use high-powered reef lighting and all of my Mac’s in my collection are pristine brand new coloration. Works 100% of the time, even on the darkest yellowed cases.

    PB190 & System 7.1?

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Although I was still hoping that someone found a way... I use 7.1.(1/2/Pro) pretty much exclusively on my 68k Macs and I was hoping that the 190cs could be a convenient portable contemporary with a fast CPU to boot. But if it has to run a different (and, IMHO...

    PB190 & System 7.1?

I was referring to any variant of 7.1 (including 7.1.2 etc). But yeah, looks like Performa 630, 640, and PB190 are the only ones without either native 7.1 support or a system enabler. I guess Apple just didn’t bother for these three models. Weird. I assume the way it works is that the System...

    PB190 & System 7.1?

I just completed a full restore of a PB190cs, only to realize that, apparently, it's the ONLY(?) 68k machine that doesn't support system 7.1. Or is there a way to make it work? I checked the System Enabler docs but I don't see a supported version.

adding 4mb SGRAM to PowerPC 5500/6500 ... and possible ATi Rage Pro upgrade

So unfortunately I only have a 5500 chassis which makes it prohibitive for testing voltages etc. The plastics are fragile, so I’m not willing to take it apart. I’ll look through my bins to see if I have an extra Gazelle harness. Edit: Or maybe I can just apply the proper voltages to the power...

adding 4mb SGRAM to PowerPC 5500/6500 ... and possible ATi Rage Pro upgrade

This would be terrific if possible, especially for the 5500! I have a couple spare 5500/6500 boards and I believe I have a junk beige G3 board laying around somewhere. Willing to blindly swap ICs if that helps. :)

    Classic II analog board corrosion--help?

I would just repair it, especially since you already recapped it. The ground plane looks intact but I would scrape around to make sure. I would scrape those blackened traces too. Then just wrap some wire around that disconnected pin, add some solder, and connect it to the trace. Then reapply...
