    Gigadesigns MC7447 and G4 CUBE

Have you tried using a different PSU? The Artmix VRM should be able to handle this. Heck, even the stock PSU should probably work (until it fries and takes half the cube with it). But the symptoms you describe definitely hint at a power delivery issue.

The quest to get ANOTHER fully working PowerBook 180

Thanks. I guess the 180 is a true lottery since most sellers are not willing to let it sit for an hour or two to let you know if it's tunneling. I'll definitely watch for it worsening. This looks to be true. I let it run for almost 3 hours, and it never got any worse than what you saw in...

The quest to get ANOTHER fully working PowerBook 180

So I received my PB 180 and I was prepared to bake it but the tunnel vision on it is very minimal I think. At least compared to some of the pictures I’ve seen. After an hour, there’s a slight edge forming at the bottom left of the screen. But other than that, the screen looks perfect. If it...

New theory on the cause of the infamous Tunnel Vision problem - Testers needed!

I wonder if baking seals the edges initially (due to the metal bracket etc), trapping the remaining moisture, then later they come apart and allow some of the trapped stuff to escape out while it's diffusing between the layers. Hence the improvement over time. If that's the case, repeated bakes...

New theory on the cause of the infamous Tunnel Vision problem - Testers needed!

Just doing some research... I did notice that almost in all pics I've seen where there's been improvement, the outermost edges are nearly perfect, while the areas inside the edges show only incremental improvement. Given that the going theory has to do with layer adhesion and trapped moisture...

The quest to get ANOTHER fully working PowerBook 180

Hey, is there a potential risk/benefit to running it more than 5 hours? Or is that just an arbitrary number that seems to produce good results? Could I run it longer at the same temp without risk to the panel? I just bought a 180 and just planning my approach while waiting for it to ship.

Se/30 with booster, synchr030 and zzj video

I feel the same way. I have three (and a half) SE/30s and I can’t bring myself to modify any one of them with modern components. It wouldn’t feel the same.

    Oh No! More Macs

Congrats. You can never have enough SE/30s.

IIfx 16 MB Composite SIMM, Temperature, Power Usage, and Tinning

By the way, from my recollection, IIfx will not give you a sad chime if the RAM is missing or “undetected” but it generally chimes for bad RAM. It sometimes takes a very long time, like up to a minute after happy chime.

IIfx 16 MB Composite SIMM, Temperature, Power Usage, and Tinning

I experienced the same thing with my 16MB “Doug Brown SIMMs”. I added solder to the pads, same as you did, and now they snap in nice and tight and work flawlessly. The key is to tin them all to the same thickness which is more tricky than it might seem. I use Kapton tape on the back side to...

    jmacz journey

That should be fine for the most part. There are some boards that are designed to make electrical contact with the RF shield, in which case you should just make sure those contact points are not coated with non-conductive material. Edit: To clarify further, I’m referring to boards like the...

    jmacz journey

The RF shielding is always nickel or zinc plated steel, with the plating layer providing corrosion resistance. Acids from exploded batteries or other sources dissolve the protective plating and corrode the steel underneath. If you remove the corrosion, you’re still left with exposed steel...

Was the Daystar Turbo 040 the best 040 accelerator?

IMHO pretty much all the 030/040 accelerators from that era are really good. I have a bunch of cards from various manufacturers (e.g. Daystar, Micromac, Applied Engineering, Novy Systems, etc) and never had any issues with any of them. But the Daystars probably have the widest compatibility...

Mac SE/30 suddenly strange screen. [see photo] Startup Chime good.

Personally I would just solder the IC down and then run a wire from the via to the leg. Before all that, I would clean up the pads and scrape the traces to ensure you have continuity (pad 2 trace looks broken, for example). Lifted pads don’t matter as long as you have a few good pads to hold...

Cube Owners: Artmix VRM II available, slightly updated

Excessive heat is a failure point for all electronics. But you can definitely reach current limits of the Cube's built-in VRM before heat becomes an issue, especially if you use cooler-running hardware or have a good cooling solution.

Refurbished PowerMac 6500 Acting Up. Did I do it?

Standard 9.2.2 will not work on a 6500. You need the OldWorld version: https://www.macintoshrepository.org/52635-mac-os-9-2-2-for-pre-g3-power-macintoshes As for rescuing your disk, I would just boot from an 8.6 or 9.1 CD, delete the system folder, and start a new installation. Also, zapping...

    SSD Solution For 5500

Just wanted to share my solution. I ended up using the Sonnet ATA card with Startech SSD adapter and a generic Kingston SSD. I knew this would work since the same solution works in the 5500's contemporaries, but I didn't have a solution for placement. Until today! I decided to just mount it...

    Finally got a Macintosh II!

Agreed. The IIx appears to be the rarest of the three. I suspect the reason is that when it was released, most people, businesses, and universities already bought the Mac II and weren’t ready to put down that kind of money for a relatively minor upgrade. The IIfx was a different story. The...
