    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

This is wild: I couldn't boot from HD if it was slave, but I can boot from CD if it's slave! ( boot zip:,\\BootX) So, now I'm trying to install Mac OS X Panther on the second partition! I might have an issue when it reboots for the second disk, but we'll see. OK, it's booted back into Mac OS...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Isn't "here's how bad adapters are made" and "here's how to select good Molex to SATA adapters" the same thing? Anyway, I watched the video and it looks pretty good. I've been scanning adapters at CPC Farnell. So, this is a bad one. This one is a crimped Molex to 2x SATA power, which is a...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

I've been looking up Molex to SATA power connectors and so far it seems like they're literally a sure-fire method for a toasty B&W G3 . Great. So, how am I supposed to power an internal SATA drive on my B&W G3 given that the PCI card only has data connectors? They do say more expensive ones...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

It's a bit fuzzy I admit! Up until about System 5 pretty much all of it was Toolbox stuff in ROM. The Finder of course was always on disk, because it was the launch application (you can replace it with your own). System patched stuff, but also control panels and printer drivers were on disk...

    Retro68 build issues.

@bribri , @Crutch , @lauland1 : somehow I missed your helpful replies earlier. I'll look into it. @lauland1 I think one thing that disappoints me with Retro68 is that it doesn't produce multi-segment applications for 68K apps AFAIK.

Aaaah, the other site's actual post was a reference to dosdude1 too!

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Vive la Révolution! It makes sense. I like Forth, which is why I keep pestering @joevt about it. I once developed FIGnition, a DIY computer based around it - it was somewhat Jupiter Ace-ish in the word set, but it never had a proper decompiler. I don't really get the Open-firmware architecture...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Is that a good thing, or more of a detailed explanation for why Slave booting doesn't work? So, at the moment I have the HD where the Zip should be: zip /pci/@d/mac-io/ata-3@20000/disk@1 But dev / ls doesn't list: /pci/@d/mac-io/ata-3@20000/disk@1 just disk (no @0 nor @1). A...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

@croissantking / @joevt I made a bit of progress with the HD. I booted with my bootable Mac OS 9.1 in the CDROM as master (:::8 or ::8 for the jumper setting where 8 is the jumper) and with the Zip drive replaced by the 40GB HD (as slave, :::: or :::). From OF I could list the devices. I took a...

    Pop-up menus on System 6

Obviously, lots of early pre-System 7 apps use controls within WINDs. The major reason why I suspect that DITLs aren't used for this is because they only implement a layout manager suitable for DLOGs where the dimensions of the window are fixed.

Threaded Interpreted Language, which is what Forth is usually implemented as, although I prefer Direct Threaded Code over Indirect Threaded Code. I quite like Token Forth, because it means you can (in theory) write 32-bit Forth as compactly as 16-bit Forth. OK.

All very intriguing. They contain OHCI, because class code oc:00:10 is there, but they can't boot from OHCI, because there's still a bit of fcode missing? Oh, right, so like Forth. You could copy the OF firmware (the actual ROM on Flash) compile in some more Forth definitions to support OHCI...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Hmm, I've just tried this with the 40GB HD that had had a possibly corrupted version of Panther on it as Slave (as is the ZIP drive) and the DVD ROM as master, but it doesn't seem to spin up with the Mac OS 9.1 CDRW in it. I can hear the HD clicking early on as though it was powering up OK...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Correct, but see earlier @joevt comment about perhaps being able update the B&W G3 firmware to support these features Including the 8GB OS limit. This would be a very fair trade-off! I had a bootable 8.1 install on my PB1400, but it wasn’t reliable enough to complete the boot. Maybe data...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Thanks for the reply. There's two ATA connectors. The RHS one folds over and under the logic board, then up through the chassis to feed both the ZIP drive and CDROM (at least that must be the case, because the ZIP drive is ATA and so is the CD-ROM). The other ATA connector feeds the HD only...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Well I could have some fun trying that but most control panels don’t work because it’s not possible to write prefs to the CD! I am not seriously trying to substitute a CD for a hard disk and get a fully usable system. I’m playing around to see what’s possible until the SATA card arrives or I...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

It was originally a server B&W with a SCSI PCI card, but that's been removed. So, are you saying existing firmware updates provide workarounds for the IDE issues? Hmm, so the ROM is Flash and you think it's possible to update the firmware to provide all these things? That would be astounding...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

All this is very generous, I feel really thankful! I deliberately asked for my friend's worst B&W G3 (he has a few) so that he could keep the better ones and very much anticipated getting the bad ATA controller. It runs at 350MHz, so it's not even the slowest B&W G3 there was. Theoretically it's...

    My Mad B&W G3 Setup!

Thanks! I ordered a Sil3112 based SATA PCI card, and the Sil3112 chipset is supposedly B&W compatible. Unfortunately I figure it doesn’t come with the right cables, so I’ll probably have to get some too. Failing that I’ll buy an IDE PCI card.
