    Laserwriter IIf

Cool! Let me know how it goes. It's tough because it looks like all the sources for blades is now exhausted. I've tried the various vendors mentioned in the threads here and they are all discontinued/out-of-stock. Also searched via Google and ChatGPT, all discontinued. Similar issue with...

    Laserwriter IIf

My turn at trying to get one of these Laserwriter II printers up and running. I received a relatively good looking Laserwriter IIf earlier this year (@techstep picked it up for me from an e-cycler). I ended up going back to that e-cycler the following week and picking up a banged up Laserwriter...

Quadra 950 Power Supply - context: the secondary side of my stock PSU was dead so I opted to go with an ATX conversion of a Corsair HX1200 PSU which provides 30A on the 5V rail AND has independent voltage regulation of 12V, 5V, -12V so that you don't have to resort to the issues in previous ATX...

Poor man's DB15 to 13W3 cable. :) 3D printed a cover for the connector and filled it with hot glue to ensure it's solid and the internal wiring doesn't fall apart.

Actually, PWR_OK won't work... it comes up after all lines stabilize and that will just result in the 12V being late now. I'll just gate the 12V with the 5V, that should do it I think.

RE: The Quadra 950 speaker pop issue... Here's the output from my oscilloscope. Yellow = 12V rail, Pink = 5V rail, Blue = -12V rail. First the stock apple power supply. Essentially all three rails start around the same time. And the following is the Corsair HX1200 ATX PSU: The 12V rail...

Picked up an Apple Portrait Display from @nickpunt a little while back. It wasn't able to produce anything meaningful on the screen and I suspected it was the RasterOps cable being used as beeping out the pins showed it wasn't wired like Apple's official DB15/13W3 pinout. I wasn't about to pay...

    Nick's finds

It was the cable. Made my own cable and the display is working.

Weird.. if I power the -12V line ahead of time before the main PSU kicks in, the speaker pop volume drops to match the stock PSU. Doesn't change the behavior of that LED on the ROM SIMM however. Must be a timing thing. Need to check for any delays on the three rails for each PSU with a scope...

I borrowed a Quadra 950 stock power supply from @techstep. With that stock unit, there's still a pop but it's much lower in volume compared to what I hear with the ATX converted power supply. Voltages on the stock unit: ~5.1V/~12.3V/~-12.1V. Voltages on the ATX unit: ~5.05V/~12.1V/~-12.3V. Seems...

I was watching a video of a Quadra 950 boot and it doesn't have the loud speaker pop on boot. So not sure what's going on. Need to disassemble it and debug as it's just bothering me at this point :) I believe @Bolle mentioned the units he had were doing the same thing so there must be something...

    Q950 psu in smoke.

Indeed I did. Found a PSU putting out 30A on 5V so went with a conversion and it works great. My stock PSU had power on the primary side but was completely dead on the secondary side. I think the transformer died. Rather than debugging, I saw a Corsair HX1200 for sale used at $50US so I went...

Radius Rocket 32-bit addressing issue on a Macintosh IIX

FWIW, my IIfx freezes with RocketWare with 32bit addressing enabled… but that was with 128MB of memory. Others on this forum had the same freeze with 32bit enabled, but it worked when they took it down to 20MB of memory. RocketShare works fine with 32bit addressing and with a ton of memory...

Quadra 950 is done... that static pop immediately on power on (before chime) is annoying, wish there was something to be done about it. Feels like some unexpected noise going to the speaker on power on before everything has stabilized. Maybe needs something to keep the speaker down until a split...

    Powerbook 500 series broken hinges

It most likely broke off the plastic in the display. You can take it apart, clean it up, 3d print new hinge mounts (many models on thingiverse and I also have a model in the link in my signature), and then mount the hinges. If it broke due to the magnesium chassis cracking, you can try epoxying...

Spoke with Bolle and he mentioned the quadra 950s he worked on all seem to have this pop from the speaker before chime. So it sounds like a common issue. In that case, I'm not going to worry about this now.

    Nick's finds

I picked up @nickpunt's monitor today and confirmed the same results as he saw. Connected it to an 8*24 card which is known to support the portrait display and still I'm unable to get proper sync. A standard cable for the portrait display doesn't require an adapter. But the fact that this...

    Radius Rocket Compatibility

I did finally get my hands on a Radius PrecisionColor Pro 24 XK. It came with ROM version 2.0. Took me a while to get a driver that worked. RadiusWare 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.3.2 all didn't recognize the card. Finally got something that worked by downloading RadiusWare 3.4.1 from Macintosh Garden...

Finished the Quadra 950 ATX converted power supply. As I mentioned before, it's using a Corsair HX1200 which is a PSU from 2016-2020 that is no longer sold but you can find them used and in good condition. It has independent regulation of the voltage rails, and provides 30A on 5V. It's an...
