    Recommend a support Mac for my Color Classic Mystic

    Somehow the Maxell bomb has not exploded yet. If you can save anything, get rid of the PRAM battery asap! :) Yes, the giant fan should always be running. I think this case will need a good dismantling to really get rid of all the gunk and goo.

    FTP question on resource forks: OS7 <-> OS9.2.2 <-> OSX10.11

    Oh no, author of that post. :-D I am not Steve Capps or any one of that app’s caretakers at Macromedia.

    FTP question on resource forks: OS7 <-> OS9.2.2 <-> OSX10.11

    There's several freeware apps out there that can change type and creator codes. The ResEdit suggestion was mostly to get a giant dump of the resource fork so you could see what was going on there. SoundEdit 16 used to ship with one on its CD-ROM, I think it was FileTyper. You can create little...

    Can't connect to 10.2 AppleShare from 7.1

    Seems Danamania knew about this eons ago, via System 6 Heaven. There's also instructions there for "Connecting a System 6 Mac directly to Mac OS X 10.1" (and presumably 10.2), which will probably come in handy to someone at a later date.  ;-)

    Recommend a support Mac for my Color Classic Mystic

    I think early HFS had a hard limit of a 2 GB partition size, which is probably where you're running into trouble with System 7.1. There's a great thread on volume size limits by System version right here on 68kMLA. System 6.0.8L doesn't run on Color Classics, though there was some speculation...

    Recommend a support Mac for my Color Classic Mystic

    G5s are fine, they just make for better PPC Linux boxes thanks to 64 bit POWER4 lineage and they are CHEAP. They won't do everything a beige G3 or PM 9600 can, but they have their benefits as a Logic Node and they can still run Classic when you need it. What I'm about to suggest is ridiculous...

    Can't connect to 10.2 AppleShare from 7.1

    You might also need the File System Manager 1.2 extension. Basilisk II needs this for file sharing pre-System 7.5 systems, too. The guide for an SE/30 references the "File Sharing Extension", but I don't think that's quite right. I think FS Manager is the one you need.

    Farallon EtherMac Adapter

    You might just need a driver. This is assuming that the DaynaPORT drivers just work with it, from preterhuman.net . One of my favorite Hotline servers!

    FTP and OS7.6

    More on this specific topic, about Mac OS 7.6 and networking. It would be helpful if you shared the source that claims that 7.6 is better with FTP. Partially because that seems fishy right off the bat, as System 7 doesn't ship with an FTP server that I know of. AppleTalk, LocalTalk, and various...

    FTP question on resource forks: OS7 <-> OS9.2.2 <-> OSX10.11

    This is also redundant, but coming from the AIFF Wikipedia entry (which is quite good!) is the original spec for AIFF. As said above, AIFF, even in the early Apple II and Macintosh form, did not use the resource fork. If there's anything that uses the resource fork, it might be Finder...

    FTP question on resource forks: OS7 <-> OS9.2.2 <-> OSX10.11

    Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) doesn't need a resource fork, as others have said. I'm not sure what .aif is supposed to be, assuming that's another file format and not a typo (EDIT: no, same thing). If you just make sure to stick the .aiff file extension at the end of the filename...

    FTP and OS7.6

    If you really do think there's a problem with resource forks, you should check to see if they're there with ResEdit on classic Mac OS and DeRez on the Mac OS X command line before flagging that as the problem. DeRez is also available as an MPW tool in the classic Mac OS, but MPW has a...

    Dove FastNet SE ethernet card - software/info needed!

    Nah. :) I mean I suspect that there are other combinations worth trying, but on a lark I did try a more lenient encoding like UTF-8. With that, the file size bloats and it's still corrupted. Although thinking about how this could have been corrupted, and the archive was created around 1998...

    Dove FastNet SE ethernet card - software/info needed!

    I think you're on to something. Though if it is an encoding error, it's hard to say if the data is recoverable. Especially for things like strict 7-bit ASCII where certain byte ranges that can't be interpreted are thrown out. I tried using Mac OS X's iconv command line tool, as in: iconv -f...

    Dove FastNet SE ethernet card - software/info needed!

    I'm still playing around with that archive. It's interesting to break open in a hex editor because the header looks like a normal StuffIt 5.x file: 53747566 66497420 28632931 3939372D 31393938 20416C61 6464696E 20537973 74656D73 2C20496E 632E2C20 68747470 3A2F2F77 77772E61 6C616464 696E7379...

    Farallon EtherMac Adapter

    A thread on Apple's discussion forums claims that it was made for Farallon by Dayna so you could be on the right track there. :) Seems in the not too distant past there was even some discussion here about finding the drivers. With (some) working links, too!

    SOS Macintosh Iicx won't shut down.

    The compact IIs (IIcx, IIci), and the Quadra 700 all had the same PSU, and I am nearly certain that the Quadra 650, IIvx and the PM 7100 had an upgraded version of the same PSU that fits in the same form factor. I've run a Quadra 650 logic board with the IIcx PSU one time when I was dealing...

    SOS Macintosh Iicx won't shut down.

    Astec PSU? Just a thought, because I've run into some really funny issues with those as they age. Seems that Delta Electronics and Sony branded PSUs were built out of better bits.
