    Macintosh Application Environment for Unix

I'm trying to install the trial on a SS5 running Solaris 2.6. I'm logged-in as root and in the same directory as the extracted files. Running "./INSTALL.SH" or just double-clicking it in the file manager gets me the first (welcome) page but when I hit enter to continue it gives me an error "The...

I don't know what could be causing that communications error. There's an option in the debugger that you can enable for slow debug machines, but I didn't have it enabled and I was running the debugger fine on a Classic II. I guess you could try it anyway. Otherwise I think that's much the same...

The furthest you'll probably get with D7E1 is the first pic that The Macster posted (or possibly the next screen which IIRC is "Preening Disks"). This is as it's just being bootstrapped from 7.5. I have distant memories of getting that far with Basilisk II years ago (as you don't actually...

It won't work on any emulator. It barely works on real Macs as it is ;) One of the problems with Sheepshaver is that it doesn't actually emulate hard disks. They're seen by the emulated Mac OS as floppy drives. Run Disk First Aid and you'll see.

When the Access Fault box pops up in the debugger are you clicking OK and hitting the "play" button in that window above it? That will allow the boot to continue to the next fault. It's worth reading the debugger section in the how to install D11E4 document. You can also tell the debugger to not...

The themes worked just as they did in 8.2+ so any running app would be skinned like that. Here's the same Hi-Tech theme in 8.6 with SimpleText open. In my D11E4 pics I enabled the Gizmo theme for some of the later shots. As for the CW build, it may have just been a regular build running on a...

I had a look at the archive switch998 posted and the pics I'm thinking of are in there (Copland D7E1.gif in particular).

I think access fault can be a few things. The debugger should give more information. "No kernel stacks" was what got me thinking about memory when I couldn't get D11E4 to boot. I have pictures somewhere of D7E1 running that I found online so it should be possible and a stock 6100 should be ideal.

The CHRP dream that Jobs killed . . .

An old Tempo build finally "leaked" out recently in a flood of developer CDs. Included in it was a curiously-named enabler called DNA. Upon further inspection it appears to be (at least partially) a CHRP enabler. ScorchedEarth discovered this so I dug around it and took a pic of it open in...

    8.1 on a LCIII

I should have mentioned that thanks to a kind donation the RAM is now maxed at 36MB (and was for those tests). I also got to add an ethernet card (but no FPU).

Can you put in one of those 16mb sticks and run it with 24mb RAM? Also you may have more success with bootstrapping it from 7.5 (and replacing the System file) rather than 7.1. This is going by LCGuy's posting here. Also that CD was "Mac OS 8 Revealed" not Unleashed.

That Access Fault debugger error has me thinking it may still be a RAM issue. 40mb may be too much and 8 is probably too small. Can you get it to 32? I have seen it running on other machines so I know it is possible to get it going. Having said that, when I had too much RAM in mine it stalled...

B&W Rev A - Is it really that bad?

I tried using HardDisk Toolkit to limit the drive speed but it still corrupted. I wonder if it would have worked better if I'd used that HDAT2 method. Guess I'll try it sometime :)

    Classic repair

Hi Damien. Thanks for getting in touch. The water here is pretty hard too, hence my use of de-ionised water as well. I've just put the board back in and it fired up straight away. I'm going to leave it sitting for a while to see if I hear any wailing from the speaker (yeah it's back whistling...

    Classic repair

That sounds good. I've just left it sitting in some of the de-ionised water. When I was pouring it in I aimed at the areas where I could see some of the goop. So I'll leave it sitting in that till tomorrow and have a look at it. Give it a wipe down if needed. Then I'll put it on the shelf over...

    Classic repair

I wouldn't trust my tapwater so I picked up some de-ionised water. Is it enough to just leave the board soaking in it? And for how long? The comment in that flickr stream said 2 days. But I don't think I'll add any detergent to it. For now I'm hoping a clean will fix it up (this is what I'm...

    8.1 on a LCIII

I benchmarked the LC III earlier comparing 7.1 with 8.1 using Speedometer 4.0.1. Here are the results (winning scores are bolded): 7.1 CPU: 0.432 Graphics: 0.376 Disk: 1.827 Math: 1.498 8.1 CPU: 0.431 Graphics: 0.371 Disk: 1.771 Math: 1.503 In 8.1 math was slightly faster but disk...

    Best OS for Original LC

I found 7.1 quite slow on my Classic II. But 6.0.8 flew. I bet it looks neat in colour too. Hopefully it can run most or all you want. If you install System Picker you could even put both on and try for yourself.

So I finally got my Classic II open...

And it was surprisingly easy. Since I got it I was getting occasional whisting noises out of the speaker and the occasional 3 thick vertical stripes on boot. These would usually show up if it had been left off for a while. They'd stay onscreen for up to 10 seconds and then it would boot fine...
