    Portable Backlit (not backlit)

You really do need a battery. 6 Volt lead-acid type as for a burglar alarm, if you don't want to rebuild an original battery. The AC adapter doesn't supply enough surge current, even the 3-Amp one. Also, those adapters are getting old, and don't always supply a steady 7.5 Volts. I had one jump...

Got it working! Located a ][ Plus in working shape, and put the stuff in it. I've been going through the diskettes checking each one for read errors, locating backups and duplicates of files on working disks, and I think things are pretty well recovered. I'll post some MP3 recordings to .me in...

SE/30 and BNC ethernet network, anyone?

The difference between an AUI 15-pin transceiver and an AAUI Apple transceiver other than the connector used is Apple's AAUI port furnishes 5V power, and the AUI port furnishes 12V. If you have a hub with a thinnet port, that will be easy to connect to if you get a couple of Ts, a 50-Ohm...

SE vs. Portable ROM, 8 MB RAM in SE?

You *could*, but... You could move the ROM addresses to $90 0000 in any compact Mac by fooling with the address decoder PALs, so they could have 9 MB of RAM like a Portable (8 MB in a 5126). You'd have to go thru the ROM and correct every place where non-relocatable code exists. The hardware is...

5GB will be tight, but you're OK to install 10.2 along side OS 9 on a single partition. Good to have an OS 9 install disk or complete backup in case something goes wrong and you have to reformat and start from scratch.

No. Those tricks were likely to fail on non-Apple+Shugart floppies, since they depended on the momentum of the stepping motor and head positioning disk. I usually used non-standard RLL encoding, odd checksums, and blank, truly erased half-tracks, since a nybble copier couldn't duplicate those...

Games you'd like to see ported to Apple II...

I did a Pac Man and Mrs Pac Man, and Tapper, and Frogger, and some "3D" shooters, and some really awful ports of console games, and I got so sick of playing games... xx( By the time you've tested every position and live / die / score situation of every level of a game, you forget how much...

Me too! SInce I really don't want to clone a copy-protected disk, Locksmith and the like aren't too useful. Somehow, I read the protected disk and wrote the files to a standard disk. I remember tools for such shenanigans, but they and my memory of how to use them are pretty dusty. :D Once...

    Old Quadra, new monitor

Phooey! I used a 21" SuperMac bottle with my Q950's built-in video, but it "just worked" so I never had to delve into the mysteries deeply. Next time I fire the old beastie up, I'll have to mate it with a VGA LCD, I expect, since the SuperMac monster went to Goodwill last year.

I'll make this a separate topic. I have just about all Syntauri software, I think, but some floppies have partially bad files, and stuff needs to be copied to new disks. At one time, I figured out how to defeat the copy protection and get Metatrak 5.0 onto my hard disk. I can probably piece...

    Mountain Computer Music System

Grrr! It's coming back to me now... my old Mountain Music cards don't work in a //e. They only work in a ][ or ][ Plus. I guess I have to find a keyboard for my Apple ][. The //e I rescued recently isn't going to fly as host for the alphaSyntauri. :( Anybody know if there are Mountain...

    Old Quadra, new monitor

OK, try "mode 5 VGA 640x480" separate sync. Avoid mode 6, sync on green, is what I meant to say. If the picture won't stop rolling / tearing, the monitor may require SOG (mode 6) but you'll have to adjust the green cutoff level to compensate, and I don't know whether it's worth messing with.

Screen Adjust on a Mac Classic?

I stand corrected. I was assuming the horizontal circuit was like a Mac Plus, which carries about 16 Volts on the yoke coils. In any case, break the glue or age stiction before turning the Mac on, and adjustment will be easy. The horizontal output transformer on the analog board IS dangerous, as...

    GS RAM cards?

Gotcha. Sounds like it is worthwhile dusting off that GS and getting GS/OS up and running. IIR it's still available from Apple's servers. :) I'll do some poking around online and see what I need. Thanks.

If your current drive is bigger than 8GB, you can't install OS X on it. A Mac with "old world" ROMs like the Kanga can't boot OS X from anywhere beyond the first 8GB of the drive. OS 9 can be anywhere within the first 128 GB of a drive. If your drive is bigger than 8GB, you need to repartition...

    IIfx Monitor?

COOL! 8-) I think I have a Spectrum in my pile o' curiosities, so that's good to know.

    Old Quadra, new monitor

The green tinge is probably because the quadra is putting out sync on green, and the monitor isn't expecting that. The added sync signal boosts the zero (black) level on the green video signal. If one of the switches controls sync, set it for TTL sync, or turn off sync on green, or however they...

    IIfx Monitor?

A Spectrum 8 and a Multi-Scan monitor ought to work together. Get one of those 15-pin to 15-pin adapters and set it to emulate the basic Apple 13" RGB display to start with. Actually, I'm a bit surprised it didn't work without an adapter.

    GS RAM cards?

Can GS/OS read a DOS 3.3 floppy? What I'm looking for is an easy way to get DOS 3.2 and 3.3 files to MacOS X. Is GS/OS another name for ProDOS, or is it something different? My GS has Woz' signature on the front, but apparently has the 01 ROMs. It has a 1MB RAM expansion card and a single 5"...

    IIfx Monitor?

If you are getting a picture on the IIGS monitor, the video card is probably putting out some sort of NTSC TV video. No telling what that SuperMac card is, so unless you can find a manual and software for it, you ought to look for a normal Apple NuBus video card which will work with your Apple...
