    Netatalk 4.0 - Future-proofing Apple File Sharing

Many ways to run it. I personally have never used macipgw. However, I'd be happy to look at it and test it out with ftp, AFP over TCP and some basic WWW stuff. If it works with System 6 and MacTCP 2.0.6 then I'd say it's good because that's generally the lowest spec. edit: Saw the mention about...

    Netatalk 4.0 - Future-proofing Apple File Sharing

ya i can usually find time to test things on the weekends. Usually the weekends are packed with things to test and do: last week I wrapped up Vicom Internet Gateway. edit: Any changes to the codebase? I would expect it to be somewhat dated, but still usable. And simplifyable -- heard something...

What should a hobbyist-focussed AppleTalk router do?

The reason for MacIP is to allow older machines, such as a Portable, which don't normally have any Ethernet devices (1) available, to use TCP and UDP protocols, like FTP, WWW and Gopher stuff. MacIP tunnels TCP traffic inside AppleTalk packets, and is one of two options to get TCP data to and...

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

Normally you have to install 8.0 first then the 8.1 updater. Installs a lot of fat and bloat normally.

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

I can do it if you get stuck, just hollar.

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

You'll find that the Legacy Recovery CD is an invaluable CD with a wide range of 68K and PPC system software, and comes as a 7.6.1 bootable CD. It'll probably work better than 8.1 directly off the CD. You could also search for ready made disk images ready to use in an emulator off Savage...

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

I would recommend a Quadra 900 with 8.1. Basilisk II doesn't really have speed problems like a real mac does but it can have its own issues. You'll probably want some way to unpack/repack, binhex/macbinary things, but you can use anything you want really. You could pack it up and then FTP it if...

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

If they say it was quite usable it was because they had an accelerator in it, and probably a Daystar PowerCache at that too, which offers more performance over a basic accelerator. It was a popular computer and still is, but if you know where we can get Daystar Turbo 601 cards then maybe we can...

Help installing Mac OS 8.1 on my Mac SE/30

I used gamba's instructions and did fine. An easier approach is to simply do a normal install on a VM like Basilisk II, perform any updates, and then edit the System file with ResEdit while still on the VM. Then copy the whole thing out over a network connection. You will find that Mac OS 8.1...

If sounds are too fast, remove Sound Manager from the Extensions folder in 7.1.

What should a hobbyist-focussed AppleTalk router do?

Year 2844: Archaeologists discover a strange collection of obsolete artifacts buried in what appears to be a gathering place or commune. Strange characters on a small green specimen in a confusing pattern suggest that it may have been used to communicate some kind of message.

Apple PCI Ethernet Card that I never knew existed

Interesting card, you are right. It was probably to work with existing setups, and probably didn't sell much. The only AAUI adapters I've heard of are 10BASE-T and 10BASE-2, and the latter is uncommon, haven't seen much of them.

    Mystery VRAM SIMMs?

Might be for an LC. I have a 68 pin SIMM out of an LC II, compared it to a 68 pin SIMM out of a Q610 and the pins ... don't exactly line up with each other.

    Interware Booster 30-SE50F Info Dump

Yeah, most of the time I don't even install 7.5 on the SE/30 as if I need to access 10.4, 7.1 with OT can do that already (ish, but usually I just use MacTCP for less system overhead) or I just use FTP which works fine. 7.5 is rather overrated on most 68030s, even faster ones like IIfx, you'd be...

    Interware Booster 30-SE50F Info Dump

Yeah I had the accelerator in there briefly and didn't really notice much of a change. I'll have to fool around with it more. A fast 68040 accelerator however, is noticeable almost immediately.

    Interware Booster 30-SE50F Info Dump

The sound issue is only a minor affair as far as I'm concerned, I mostly use System 6 and 7.1 anyways. 7.5 is too slow for me to really bother with even on the IIci, and on 68040s, I still prefer to use 7.1 unless I specifically need a later version for something. Any idea on what's a good way...

    Interware Booster 30-SE50F Info Dump

I must have missed the memo on stacking SE/30 cards. Something wrong here. Those tabs are pushing the cards off vertical. Sound Manager 3.0 (comes with 7.1 Update 3.0) causes the sound to be a little weird. Removing it causes the sound to return to normal, aside from ROM-sourced sounds like...

3D printed programmers switches; Random SE/30 reboots

The reason I wish to retain the original ROMs is for: A) Compatibility B) I'd like to use a 030 accelerator on it, for which the designer stated that original ROMs are ideal C) having a few minor quirks like switching to 32-bit mode just makes it a bit more authentic. Ish. Hard drives though...

3D printed programmers switches; Random SE/30 reboots

Think I'm narrowing it down to a bad RAM SIMM or slot. I took the 64MB out of the IIci and put it in the SE/30, been testing with Snooper 2.0 all 81MB and seeing what happens. Been running OKish. Testing the modules removed in a different machine.

Using Apple II as a dumb terminal?

Try using the built-in terminal. Check that the path to getty is correct. Try using a Linux VM and see if that works.
