The simple answer is 32-bit clean code, which would allow you to install anything over 10 Mb of RAM. The long answer is that you wouldn't need to muck around with extensions and unnecessary RAM tests at startup that can increase boot time by minutes.
In the world of emulation, hardware is...
ROM-inator II from BMOW is pretty stinking awesome. It does the whole 32-bit fix and has some software built in to do various troubleshooting. The ability to write custom ROM code if you have inclination to dig into the editor. Pretty affordable too, if you ask me. The guy who makes them is a...
Memory is going to come in two parts. Memory X has a decent price for 16 MB modules so I'm ordering 64 Mb as soon as possible. If I ever find a good enough reason to setup A/UX, I'll max it out. Probably snag a ROM-inator II for developing. And not just because it's a great Phineas and Ferb...
Have you tried opening the case to view the armature on startup? It might be stuck from age and deteriorating bump-stops. Easy, though messy, fix if you have data you really need to recover.
I recently started a full resto on a SE/30. It has the same SuperDrive but the HD is a 40Mb Apple branded Quantum. My SuperDrive decided that it was going to start playing with my emotions when it didn't want to give up the disks anymore. I went to the forums and YouTube and rolled up my...
While voltage is consistent on all USB ports, it is possible that amperage is not nearly enough to power the circuit for complete read/write. That would cause the drive to fail its own POST and refuse to send the proper signals to OS 9. It's pure speculation on my part, but you can troubleshoot...
Ever so brief follow up...
When reading instructions from a manual in either highly specific technical manuals or even simple forum instructions, make sure to read each step before performing each step. Then make sure to read the step again. Read a step, do a step, read a step. This will keep...
Update in parts!
I ordered v5 of SCSI2SD. Inertial Computing was very open in communication and shipping was quick. When it came, it was already loaded with the newest firmware, so that step was skipped. I had issue trying to setup the drives using the instructions...
I was waiting for techknight to contribute to this, but I think he's up to his megavolts in machines right now. I chose the tantalum SMDs in my situation because of several things:
They can be purchased from somebody here in the forums, further contributing to the welfare of the community
They...
Update on the disk copy:
dd is a better friend than trying to use Disk Copy in OS 9 on an iBook. I suppose there is a way to spoof the USB floppy drive location to look as if it is installed, but I didn't find the patience or the software to get the "Make Floppies" command to un-dim. Once I...
Super sick Joe! Shapeways wants to know if this is in mm, cm, or inches. Which should I say? Also, was this intended to be printed in PLA or something else?
Floppy drive is on order. Sunday afternoon me and the iBook will be sitting down and compiling a set of install disks to figure out if the original hard disk has any sort of life left in it. Thanks for the dd reminder rsolberg! I'm glad there's a solid plan B, just in case.
Do you do anything to reflow the joint to the board? I would be a little concerned about an unseen cold joint or potential stress from board flex. I think it's a great idea to use the existing legs compared to chasing out the old solder. The idea of buying a desoldering gun just for the...
Let's see here...according to my naval aviation mantenance micro miniature manual, target topside temperature should fall between 95 and 105 degrees Celsius. I think it's tough to say when that is without experience or an infrared thermometer.
Tiger. Classic is in tact. I forgot that I have OS 9 on an iBook also if that makes a difference. I know the disk utilities are a little different in each.
I need floppies with the installer. At this time, I've got a PowerBook G4 and a MacBook Air. Networking those two together is no big deal but trying to get the SE/30 online to work with images is beyond me. I do have the .img files on my server, but I thought I needed some sort of special floppy...
Thanks for that! This model has a superdrive though. No need to worry about expensive 800k disks. There are several AOL disks in this box that have penned on their covers "Jeff's word" and the like.
