“Finder” Bomb error when reading cd-rom

I connected a generic SCSI with external cd-rom to my SE and loaded the Sunrise CD 2.2c drivers. I am running 7.1.1 with system update 3. When I insert a cd-rom, I see the drive activity light begin to flicker, I hear the drive spin up, then I get a bomb error “Finder” and the computer freezes...

512k mouse == pc serial mouse?

Oh my! I skimmed over that both times I read the page and was just going to post a "can someone please point out the offensive line..." type of post. I wonder why the author thought it necessary to include that kind of detail? Some people always point out the differences and negative things in...

512k mouse == pc serial mouse?

Just like the topic says: I have a db9 serial mouse from a PC. Will it work on a 512k compact Mac?

My next restore project: PB 540c

I was able to get the hard drive to work again by reseating the SCSI bus cable. I then initialized the drive, loaded 7.5.3, updated to 7.5.5, and proceeded to install some software - After Dark 3.0, iCab 2.99b, The Oregon Trail, SimCity 2000, etc. Restore is coming along nicely...

My next restore project: PB 540c

After a trip to visit Macdrone, (who has almost everything Apple ever made in triplicate) he sold me a working power supply and an Asante Ethernet adapter for this machine. With the short time I had to work with him before leaving his place to take my daughter to move into her college dorm, we...

My next restore project: PB 540c

Does the powerbook 520c and 540c have the same external plastic parts? Would the broken "right panel housing" that I asked about from a 520c fit onto a 540c?

My next restore project: PB 540c

I have been eyeballing this 540c at my local scrapper's shop for about 6 months now. Finally asked about it and it was completely untouched since arriving at their shop - a retro bag of mystery! I struck a fair deal with the shop and took it home. I have a friend (who is a member here) who has...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

So glad to hear that you got this working! We could have avoided a bit of the back and forth if I had thought to ask you if the link light was lit on the Ethernet port you were plugging into. My bad. If you did reboot the routers, that may have did something. Otherwise I am guessing that the...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

We do not mean for you to use 8.8.8.8 for your IP address. We mean for you to use that for your Name server address. Use 192.168.1.254 for your IP address and use 192.168.1.1 for the Router address. Try those settings and let us know what you get.

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

Try changing the Name Server addr: field to only this IP: 8.8.8.8 That is a public DNS server on the Internet. Search domains should be ok to be blank. That setting is telling your computer which domain names it doesn't need to use a DNS server for. If you entered 'apple.com' in Search domains...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

You don't want to use 192.168.1.137 for your Mac if it is already in use by the Windows computer. That Windows computer was assigned that IP address by DHCP running on your router. I would use either a very high IP address in the 192.168.1.x subnet (like 192.168.1.254) or a very low one like...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

Your router's IP address is going to be the same as the gateway address from your ipconfig /all that you ran on the windows machine. Your router has two IP addresses, one is public (on the Internet side of things) and one is private (on your network.) I think you said before that it was...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

    1. Router address will be your Gateway address 2. Name Server will be your DNS server. Either get this from the "ipconfig /all" on the windows PC or just use the public "8.8.8.8" 3. I would bet that you can leave the starting and ending domain names blank. I have never heard of TCP settings...

Help with TCP/IP, OT and OS 7.6

DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) means that your IP, netmask and gateway (and sometimes DNS) will all be assigned dynamically by the network router or the dhcp server. It should ignore what you have typed into the fields. Most modern home routers serve dhcp and it will work with most...

Audio Jack volume control on SE

I figured out my sound issue. The Maxell Battery Bomb had corroded my pins inside the speaker pigtail plug, nearly to the point of eating them into two pieces! I have the wires taped to the pins on the logic board for today, but tomorrow I am borrowing a tool to crimp a new plug on the pigtail...

    New Member, Old Mac SE

I received my order of 16v 33uF axial caps from Mouser yesterday, and so tonight I decided to try my hand at soldering and replace the cap closest to the battery holder. I bought enough caps to do all of them, but I wanted to start slow and really ease into it. I have not soldered much in my...

Once I get it all refurbished, I think I am going to restore an Apple IIe next. But I may decide to do the SCSI2SD adapter, or a SCSI->Ethernet bridge, or an accelerator or...   :p I read somewhere on here that techknight has only ever resurrected one board from a Max-hell aftermath. Not...

Last night, my cousin (who is much better at soldering than I am) stopped by and helped me get the new capacitor and battery holder installed. We had to file down the posts on the battery holder to get them to fit the holes in the logic board. Here are a few pictures of the installation...

Audio Jack volume control on SE

Ok. I have not yet checked the traces but I have tested the machine with inherent impotence headphones. With my Sennheiser cans, the volume is responsive at each numerical level, but is really still too loud at any volume above 2. So at least part of my issue was the iPhone earbuds. I'll report...

Audio Jack volume control on SE

I will check the traces around the audio components. Also, yes, these were standard iPhone earbuds. I will try it with some Sennheiser HD280s that I used to DJ with. They should be able to handle the impedance.
